Looks like they are calling for rain tonight, and again Monday, but so far tomorrow is supposed to just be "cloudy". If it rains tomorrow, anybody know the deal? Do we assume it's cancelled or go anyway, in cages?

Great time guys! The Rangers were a lot of fun and had some great things to say. I am sure Eric is going to post up the majority of the highlights. He had some great ideas!

I'll post up the notes after I walk my lazy butt downstairs to get them. I may even dedicate a new thread to the highlights of this meeting. This definitely was a step in the right direction! Thanks to everyone who took the time out of their busy (or leisurely) Sunday schedule to attend. This was a great turnout and the sheer number of attendees lends credibility to our cause.

Sorry I couldn't make it out guys. We had an event for 1500 people that went until 1 am. It was a huge sound and lighting setup. I finally got to sleep at 5am this morning. When the alarm went off at 7:30, my body said "you aren't going anywhere!"

Looking forward to the notes on what happened.

Here are the notes from the meeting with the Park Service Rangers. These are not necessarily chronological and definitely not all-inclusive.

Representatives from the Park Service:

Ranger Randy Lavasseur
District Ranger Eric Lisnik
Special Agent Eric Proventure (not sure of the spelling)
?

Mandatory court appearances are given for speeding over a certain, undisclosed MPH. Although later in the meeting, it was disclosed that reckless driving charges are levied for speeds exceeding 30 MPH over the limit.

Over the last couple years, the typical penalties have gone from heavy fines to incarceration.

Running from the Rangers will get you an automatic 30 days in Federal custody.

Eric Proventure - Special Agent
  • Used to live at Cauville Bay.
  • Rides a VFR.
  • Found that there were seven accidents at Cauville Bay road mile marker 1.5 from March 2007 to March 2008.
  • Observed that the most recent death at Mile Marker 1.5 was not necessarily due to excessive speed.

The ultimate goal of the Rangers is to keep riders safe!

Cameras are stationed at every Park entrance station recording license plate numbers of entering vehicles.

The special permit system is strongly encouraged for Club rides. This system gives Rangers a "heads-up" to the presence of a large number of riders. Here are a few points on this system:
  • A one-time fee for all riders within a group.
  • The permits can be applied for at the Park Service office (601 Nevada Way Boulder City, NV 89005)
  • The cost is $100.
  • Permited riders draw less attention then a large, unannounced riding group would.

There were two activities proposed during this meeting. The Park Service seemed very receptive to these activities. I will be in contact with Rangers Lisnik and Lavasseur in order to coordinate these projects.
  • The possibility of the Park Service hosting the Lee Parks Advanced Riders Clinic at their Lake Mead facilities. Big Pat... whaddya think?
  • The Park Service providing CPR/First Aid certification for riders at their Lake Mead facilities.

It was stated that for every ticket written at the Lake, there are 5-6 warnings given. The Park Rangers consider their enforcement as lenient.

I definetily think we can work with them to create some positive, constructive events. That would obviosly show them that we are serious about working with them. We do need to figure out were they have facilities big enough to hold educational/training events.

it was great day, lots of great ideas.
but now thinking back a little.... how do we reach to the new (or not so new) riders that think knows everything. all of us as a group are for more training and we're a little more responsible (with occasional speeding of course...) but (knock on wood) we are most likely not the one that will crash at the lake or red rock.
so how do we reach out and get others to be interested in training and safety ?

Just got off the phone with a business associate who patrols Red Rock. We are in the process of setting up a meet and greet with them. She was excited to hear how well it went at Lake Mead.

I'll keep you posted.

I know I'm reviving an old thread and all, but this just seemed to drop after the meeting at the lake. Were they any other meetings or events that took place or did we meet with them once and that's it? Did the meeting with the Red Rock rangers ever happen?

The rangers basically said to piss off and laid down the law from what I heard. I didn't go since I'd previously paid $473.00 for a meet and greet with a ranger and didn't even get a back stage pass or an autographed picture.

I played phone tag and emailed back and forth with Ranger Lisnik about using their facilities for rider training and/or CPR. It was a bit of a logistical nightmare. Otherwise, we really haven't had anymore interaction with them.

I thought the meeting was very good for information. As far as the people hoping to set up some sort of trackday at lake mean, yeah, that was NEVER going to happen. The rangers basically wanted the motorcycle community to know what they are looking for, what we should do to help them keep Lake Mead as safe as possible and one of the things I still retain from that very meeting, anything tripple digits is automatic JAIL time.

That's too bad, but I guess it was a bit expected that nothing much more than an informational meeting took place. Oh well, at least I know what I'm getting myself into when I go out there!
