Well I went and did it.... I took out some dudes mirror.

I was rolling down to the stop light and some semi truck started to try to squeeze me out, making lost sheep into flat sheep.

I barely got by and in the process took some dudes mirror out... sort of. I just bent it foward. But now my shoulder and arm are sore from when I hit.

That was about as close as I have come to being a flat cat under some semi.

And the semi did this on purpose? If so, I would of pulled him out of the truck and gave him a beat down for sure!!!

yea a couple of times I have noticed people try to squeeze you out if you are rolling up thru traffic to a stop light. I'm sure some people are pissed that you just saved 10 min waiting in traffic.

I used to get that all the time out in Cali. I used to bust mirrors of the people you can see doing it purposely. Gotta love the gloves with hard knuckles.

I was lane splitting (illegally, of course) while pulling up to the stoplight at Far Hills on the 215 this past Tuesday. And what seemed to be some random dipshit in a red Durango squaked his "horn" at me as I pulled alongside him. Of course, I wrote him off as another one of the 2.4 million douchebag drivers in the Valley... pissed that I was moving to the front of the queue. After I wicked it up a bit past the legal limit when the light turned green, I see the red and blue lights in the grille of Mr. Red Durango. As I slow down to pull over, thoughts of traffic lawyers were going through my mind. After the LE (in civvies) gets out and walks up to my bike, the following conversation ensues:

Pissed off LE: "I'm gonna give you a break... SLOW DOWN!" (immedately walks back to vehicle)
Me: "Thanks."
Pissed off LE: glares back at me dissapprovingly

This exchange took all of ten seconds. I promptly shitted a massive brick of relief.

As I pulled back on to the 215, I had a few deep thoughts:
  • Not all cops drive marked cruisers
  • Damn, I'm a dumbass!
  • And what sounds like a fucked up PA system, could very well be an actual police siren

Yep... they will do that. I have had people open doors, flick cigarettes, spit on me and yeah, I took out a few mirrors as well.

It's hard not to do that here in Phoenix, I do catch myself at times but mostly at lights, usually cause the slow ass snowbird is too busy sightseeing to drive.

Get out on the freeway in flowing traffic, that is a total rush. bumper to bumper yet still flowing 40 mph+ Oh yeah, the good old days.

Wish it was legal here.... but I guess you take the good with the bad, at least I don't "HAVE" to wear a helmet here if I choose not to. Gave up my bike when Cali started their helmet law. Yes, I know they are protection, but should be up to the rider..... NOT LAW! ;)

When we were in Phoenix that was the strangest thing for me to see. Most sportbikers wore helmets, but the cruiser guys didn't. I've had enough rocks to the visor and close encounters with asphalt to keep mine on.

Yeah, I get shit about it all the time. I have smacked my head on the pavement once (probably why I'm so loony LOL), it hurt, and still I don't always wear it....

For me, and I know this is not for everyone... I like the open air, as brown as it is.... so unless I am heading out on the freeway, it usually just sits in the garage.

I think the reason for the sport bike folks wearing them and the cruiser folks not is that you sport bike guys get a little nuts on those things, No Offense.... Me, I may get a little speedy at times but thats about it.... other than that, I am a fairly boring rider.

Now before you all start reaming me about not wearing it, showing me the horror photos, and warning me of the dangers, I have heard it all before. I know that low speed accidents can be just as deadly as high speed ones. You can't escape destiny..... There have been plenty of deaths where people have had helmets on. I escaped death at least 2 times in my life... one in a car accident, the other walking in on a robbery and at 43 I am kinda set in my ways and what's going to happen will happen.

Man, I need to lay off the coffee.... sorry for the book.

My first accident was enough to convince me that my helmet kept my head from coming apart, then the second accident confirmed it.

What are the laws exactly on lane splitting here in the valley? I heared it was if traffic is under 20 mph you can go thru them at no more than 20mph. Is that true? I really wouldn't want to split lanes faster than that cause I know as a very safe car driver and I always use my mirror, if someone went cuttin by me going about 40mph I might miss him. seeing him that is, and splat him. I say that cause a guy cut between the fast land and the middle lane headin south on 95 and I about shit my pants watching the guy. Kinda a retawded move.

As far as here in Vegas, I know for a fact when I was 16, ok so that was a long time ago, I got a ticket for splitting traffic when it was stopped. You CANNOT split traffic in Vegas unless your a police officer. That means at any speed..

NRS 486.351 Unlawful passing; driving abreast.

1. A person, except a police officer in the performance of his duty, shall not drive a motorcycle or moped between moving or stationary vehicles occupying adjacent traffic lanes.

2. Except as provided in subsection 3, a person shall not drive a motorcycle, moped or trimobile abreast of or overtake or pass another vehicle within the same traffic lane.

3. Motorcycles and mopeds may, with the consent of the drivers, be operated no more than two abreast in a single traffic lane.

As far as Cali: I remember that the law stated you could split lanes but you could not travel more than 10 mph than the surrounding traffic (also remaining within the speed limit.) Now I cannot find any documentation except in the 2007 California Motorcycle Handbook that strongly discourages 'sharing lanes' with any vehicle as it is unsafe - it does not state it is illegal.

In practice I can tell you that only the most conservative riders stay any where near the 10 mph-over-traffic speeds. It's pretty much a free for all. I split at what I would call ' a good casual' pace. Which means I'm often scooting to the far left of the fast lane to let those mohawk-helmeted kids fly on by .... Unless I'm late for work: in which case those kids better be skootin aside ;D

Glad you made it out of your scrape with only a little wear n' tear, my dear neighbor. Back when I was a motorcycle courier I took out two mirrors simultaneously. Yar!! Got my fingers crushed and bruised, but it was the bill for fixing the mirror to the Caddy that really hurt.

I see NLV motorcops splitting lanes at every intersection to get to the front. I would think they would have to be on a call to be allowed to do that. Maybe I'm wrong.

pat, nope, i have the perfect story to that question...

i was sitting at a light, across the intersection from me , i see a bike cop splitting lanes to the front. Then a biker behind him sees him do the same, so he decides to split to the front. THe biker gets right along side the cop and the cop, gets on the MEGAPHONE. with him serioulsy a arms length away, and says "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING" YOU ARE NOT AN OFFICER OF THE LAW" You could see from the hand gestures that the biker was trying to say something along the lines of i saw you do it, so i did it.

Yeah. He could have given him a ticket, but didnt....

You don't see cop cars breaking the law to get to the front (driving up in the bus lane), why should the bikes be able to?

And of course if we were to change lanes and take one out, it would be our fault.

Same here in AZ... the handbook says it's discouraged, but nothing about it being illegal.... this being the case, I asked a local cop when having coffee at Starbucks and he said you will get a ticket if caught. So I can assume it's illegal even though it just states discouraged.
