Do you get a false sense of safety when you are riding and have on your protective gear from head to toe? Maybe ride a bit faster? Do things you wouldn't normally do if not protected? You see it all the time in car commercials, "Government 5 Star Safety Rating"... bla bla bla... Do you think that people believe all this so maybe they drive a little less safe? Send text messages, put their make-up on, eat, whatever.... Do you get the "superman" feeling when you are in full leather and helmet? Maybe see your favorite racer walk away from a nasty spill in a race and think that will be you if you lay it down on public streets? I saw a post on another forum where a guy put his head through the back of a semi doing 120 and was drug for about a half mile. He had a helmet and a padded leather jacket.... it got me thinking.... that and seeing more and more people on their cell phones... NOT just talking, but TEXTING! WTF? texting? Keep your eyes on the road you moron! Personally, helmet and leather, or just me and the open road, I ride no different... I am always scanning the road ahead for potential problems as well as always checking my mirrors for things coming from behind. Of course, accidents happen, that's why they call them accidents. But if vehicles were not promoted as being so safe, do you think people would be more careful on the roads is the main point I am trying to make..... Discuss.

Especially here in Vegas you have to be 100% thinking that the next car you see on the road will try to kill you, and it is the riders responsibility to stay away from both the cars, and getting into situations that you have no control of (like getting boxed in, removing your escape route). I also believe that when you get complacent and comfortable, that's when the shits gonna hit the fan. And you better have an out.

I couldn't agree with you more on that Pat, ALWAYS, ALWAYS be prepared for the cars to pull out in front of you. I NEVER ride my bike without expecting every car on the road to pull out in front of me. I am constantly watching for my escape route!!

yeah, I think you guys in Vegas have it worse than we do. No offense, but Vegas has some messed up drivers. 3-4 years ago when I moved back for a short time, I was traveling from downtown to N Vegas daily.... Always seemed to be a wreck and traffic was always backed up. People speeding, weaving etc... I had my Jeep at the time which gave me a little more protection than a bike would, but man..... it still scared the hell out of me driving there. But I guess it's all in what you get use to. I use to hear about how bad drivers in LA were, after living in Phoenix for so long, last time I was in LA I couldn't believe how friendly people there were.... I mean people actually let you out into traffic when pulling out from a parking lot.... unlike here where they speed up so you don't get in front of them. Honestly, I think the reason I love to ride is.... the thrill of the unknown, not just the acceleration or speed. Where I don't want anything bad to happen... there is always that chance. And unlike in a cage, the severity of an accident can be quite devastating, even at low speeds. It really is an adrenaline rush.... I just think that when people hear how safe their vehicle is... they tend to pay less attention to what is going on around them cause they feel they will be ok if in an accident. Zoom, zoom, zoom....
