I have 2 a/c units. Downstairs is set at 75 degrees, because thats where I spend alot of time plus I sleep down there.

Upstairs is set at 83. Gets a little warm when I'm in my office but with the fan blowing on me its not too bad.

Last month my electric bill was $150... not too bad considering the house is 2900sq ft. Last year for the month of May, the bill was $425. But now I have 23 less computers running, and 2 less people living here full time.

We have an upside down model house so we live upstairs and dont really spend much time downstiars. We don't even run our downstairs AC as it stays around 75-80. We keep the upstairs at 78-80 degrees. We have fans throughout the house that come on/shut off automatically depending on the temperature. We also have solar screens on all outside windows. We usually pay around $80-100 thoughout the summer. Sometimes we get up to $150, but this year will probably be a little higher running the pool equipment.

Will....being your house having 2 a/c units w/c is good, set your upstairs higher than what you usually set for your downstairs since heat rises during summer then opposite during winter time. Now since you still have all those computers running in a daily basis I'm pretty sure your upstairs will still stay cool. Try that cause that will hardly run your a/c both at the same time and save some of your energy bill.

I used to have 30 computers running, now I only run 7. Big difference in the heat upstairs.

I have a question. Is it better to close off the vents in rooms that you do not use, or leave them open? I've heard several different opinions, but I have no idea what to do. Right now I just have rooms I dont use closed off and the door shut. Will that fuck up the AC flow in my house?

Rooms that are not being used yeah u can shut the vents off w/c will give more airflow to the rooms that are being used and will not mess up your a/c unit. Lots of my customers issues are there power bills during the summer time, and my answer to that is depending on where you set your tstat...if you want your house ice cold w/c of course will let your a/c running for a long period of times, it also depends on how insulated your house are like your attic insulation, your windows and such. I normally set mine at 78 and thats comfortable for me but of course it depends to you. Also ceiling fans helps out, i also turn up the temp when we're not home to about 82 w/c is still a descent temp when u get home and it doesn't take long till it reaches 78 to where i set it when we get home from work. Most of the time your a/c runs more during mid afternoon when its 115 outside, so if you have a household that are home during that time of course my a/c will be running. Bottom line is it all depends on how you set yur tstat and how comfortable you are with that temp, more or less yur a/c will be running. OR JUST GET A SWAMP COOLER

If you need any plumbing or a/c-heating work done see "G." He's da bomb.

Still no leaks yet bro and it's nice and cool inside. Thanks again.

usually 78. But this year we are trying 82 to see if we can not get a 300.00 bill for the months July and August. 300 a mo for electric.... what a joke. I want solar panels, but our HOA will not allow them. Maybe they would like to pay my summer electric bills..... I find it hard to believe that our HOA will not allow them but the one across the street will. Their excuse is that they are ugly.... well, if we can see the ones across the street, what's the difference with having them here?

I HATE HOA's... Next house will NOT have one!!!!!!

I have ours set for 77 during the day, but as soon as Les gets back here to work I will be raising it to 80 during the day. Nakoma liked it cool, but now that he's gone, I can raise it. And the cat digs the heat.

I did some research and wanted to get radiant barrier put up in the attic, and an attic fan (w/thermostat), but neither happened.

Robert,
what's the pros and cons of turning the ac off during the day or how high to set it.

If you turn off yur a/c while yur at work and its 115 outside yur house will definitely be sauna hot when you come home and then you turn yur a/c on, it'll take hours n hours for it to cool down where you have it set at so there goes yur energy bill, but thats depending also on how insulated yur house of course. But if you set it up high to about 80-85, yur a/c is hardly running while yur gone and still comfortable when you come home from work and runs not as much if you have it off

I also (used to) have 32 computers running, where most homes have 1 or 2.
That alone uses alot of power, and generates alot of heat that makes the AC units work alot harder. During the summer months mine would just never shut off at all, even at night. But when all that is generating $20k - $30k a month you just deal with it.

Now I just have 9 computers running... my 7 work horses, my main computer and my laptop which sits in standby mode most of the time. Air conditioners run way less, and then just for a few minutes at a time. Like I said, my power bill for this May was $150, but last May was over $400.

Just living at home by myself makes a big difference as well, I'm not the type that runs around leaving the lights on, the tv on, or leaving the front door wide open while bringing stuff in out of the car. If you drove by my house at night, you'd wonder if i was there at all because its so dark inside. I only keep a lamp in in whatever room I'm in.

Yeah, I'm down to 2 computers and 1 laptop. This friggin economy is killing me. People aren't spending like they use to. :(

and same here.... house it totally dark during the day.... got those "block out" curtains to shield out the sun and heat.... so far it's been helping.

Sad thing is, it's still nice at night down here and we got this damn thief breaking into homes here at night when people are asleep and their windows open. I have 2 big dogs, but they are getting past dogs.... so I cannot take advantage of the cool nights.

Man I wish they would catch this guy.
