This quote from American Motorcyclist, page 28, June 2008: "Under federal law, U.S. Transportation officials are barred from lobbying for or against specific state laws. But that doesn't seem to be stopping Transportation Sectretary Mary Peters, who told U.S. senators and representatives she wanted to lobby states to divert federal money away from motorcycle training and awareness programs and instead push for mandated helmet use. She's made her intentions clear in comments to the U.S, Senate Appropriations Committee Transportation Subcommittee in March, and in letters in February to U.S. House and Senate leaders. Peters is pushing to move funds out of motorcycle safety and training and awareness even though the funds were specifically approved by Congress at the request of motorcyclists who wanted to beef up the nation's motorcycle safety training and awareness efforts." This is a very recent initiative on the part of Ms. Peters and isn't likely to be found in previous initiatives on the part of the Department of Transportation ![]() |

The thing is, from what I have read in your post, she is not lobbying against/for any law changes.. She is lobbying for budget changes..... She is indirectly lobbying for Law changes.... Politics as usual......

I dont see anything wrong with a federal helmet law... not sure if diverting funds for enforcement is the right thing, how much funds does it take for cops to pull someone over and write a ticket, they fuckin do it anyway.

Oh Great! If that happens, I'm selling my bike. If you like them wear them, if not, you should have the choice. We don't need some uptight bitch, that probably has never been on a bike, dictating how we ride. When they passed the helmet law in CA, I sold my bike, bought a car and added one more vehicle to the already over populated freeways. My life, MY CHOICE! | |

So instead of having a few stupid dead people who do something stupid without a helmet, we will have a bunch of smart uneducated people die because there was no funding for motorcycle safety awareness. I say let the squids die and save the whales!

| That's fine... as long as you're willing to pay all of the costs associated with your choice. I don't want my insurance premiums going up because you "chose" not to wear a helmet.

| Quote: Yeah, that was the excuse in CA when they passed the helmet law there. It's all bullshit. People/Corporations/Governments don't care about you, just whats in your wallet. All they want is your green and will come up with ANY excuse to get it and they sell it well. Look how they passed that damn tobacco tax (here).... all bullshit and some politicians making bank. All I could find about this damn tax was the money was going to a website. That's a HELL of a lot of money for just a website. But hey, I ride like an adult. I am not out there at 150mph on the open roads weaving traffic, I am not doing wheelies and other things that the slightest miscalculation will cause an accident. Aside from the loose road dirt/gravel, my only worries are other drivers on the road. And if they hit me.... it's their insurance... not mine or yours. With your logic, no one should be driving a Mercedes.... After all, it costs more to fix them right, so when insurance shells out for those repairs they are much higher than an escort. So for every Mercedes, BMW, Porsche... that gets crunched, your rates go up right? Insurance is a joke anyway. I'm 43 now, had insurance since I was 16, paid every month for all those years and NEVER used/needed it. What's that work out to... around 32k? So why am I still paying insurance? I could total my bike twice and still have money in the reserve. State Farm owes me a new car..... !!!
