me.... but then again, I would ride naked if I could get away with it ;) but seriously... I am usually out in just jeans and a t-shirt. I love life on the edge.

| that's not a good combination . If too nervous, wear it.... otherwise that nervousness may cause an accident. IMO With me, I don't worry about it... if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen. I have been near death many times in my life.... this don't bother me. and remember this... it only hurts if you crash ;) | |

| that's a lot of trust.... see if you are in control, you control the speed, turns, etc... personally, when my GF gets on the back of my bike, I DO put the helmet and leather jacket on.... just because she doesn't ride and still too new on the back as a passenger, we are still working out the leaning issue.... LOL Just that much of a shift coming in an unprepared moment can cause an accident so better safe than sorry. I guess it's all in how much you trust the riders experience and ability. That is something only you can decide though. I know it's hot as hell this time of year and a jacket can be real uncomfortable... road rash is more uncomfortable so that might be something to keep in mind till you get your own bike. hope that made sense, i tend to babble sometimes | |

It sucks when you are in the ER and they are scrubbing the sand and gravel out of road rash. Well I was told it sucks, I dont really remember it. I didnt know I was rashed up till 4 days later, but it sucked then. And i was even wearing a jacket. Would have really sucked without one. If you think you dont need a jacket... find a hot sidewalk, take off running, and dive into it. The rash that you get from that is only from about 8mph if you run fast. Multiply it accordingly for hiway speeds.

| Quote: There are many factors involved in accidents. Not just other vehicles on the road. When the air is cooler than you outside, you wear jackets so you don't lose heat. When the air is hotter than you outside, wear your gear so that you don't overheat. Otherwise you will get skin burn, overheat, and dehydrate much faster. Most of us have seen plenty of accidents and what can happen if you don't have the proper gear.

| Good point. I don't ride in the heat so... I forgot about that. It's very rare that I go out anytime from 12pm till sunset. Not with my white skin... I burn WAY too easy. Last time I had to go out during the day I was out for an hour, 1/2 hour each way... it was about 102/105 out and I burnt to a crisp... hands, arms, face and neck. | |

Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it! Been on bikes since before I could really walk.... one the best things dad ever said to me is ... " Asphalt eats skin!" made me think that asphalt was like acid, but definitely got the point across. I have gear for all types of conditions. Be safe, control what you can, there are way too many factors that you can't control out there. Being pre paired can only enhance the joy of the ride. Just food for thought.

isnt that why they make sunscreen ..lol jkjk

| WHEN you crash. Everyone will crash eventually. Like the saying goes, "There are two types of riders, those who have crashed and those that are going crash." "Dress for the crash, not for the ride." PLEASE everyone, please wear your gear everytime you ride. You can control what you do, but not what other WILL do. No need for sunscreen when your skin is left on the asphalt....

I would NEVER ride without gear! As an example, I fell not that long ago pulling into a gas station going 10 miles per hour and the back tire hit slick concrete and just let go. I was barely even turning so there was nothing I could do. When I recovered from wacking my head on the ground (Thank you old helmet) I realized I had no injuries besides a sprained ankle. My jacket however has some pretty bad slide marks on it and my jeans were ruined.

And Mom always told me to wear clean undewear when I go riding too...noone likes to see those raggy old nasty ones without any elastic in them and the bacon strips to boot...

There is nothing wrong with wearing your gear, don't get me wrong... I would never say you are stupid for wearing it.... however I think, and I could be wrong, but it's more cool to have the leathers and stuff for you sportbike guys to look like your favorite racer... or maybe because you guys get pretty nuts on those things. With me, I just ride.... a little fast sometimes but I don't do crazy things with my bike. The only thing I worry about is the other drivers on the road... and road debris. For me, and I am only speaking for me... I like the freedom of nothing on me when I ride... by time you put a helmet on, jacket, pants, boots and gloves... you might as well be driving a car. I also like the thrill of the unknown... will today be the day that fate beats me and I go down unprotected. That just adds to the excitement of riding. I know a lot, if not all, will disagree with me and that's fine... you do what you gotta do for you. It's all good PS - I don't like sunscreen either... LOL

Road rash girl is a pretty good story... I wish I could find the link to the guy who was just going down the block to get something at the store. He ended up crashing and the site documented what happened to him over the next few years. It was pretty tragic all the hospital visit dude had to go thru. I would recommend that you wear your gear at all times.... but it is your skin

Exactly. I have always worn gear. The mesh jackets are better than nothing in the heat, and they keeps the heat off you. I'd rather replace gear than skin. Not to mention all the peeps we saw in Milwaukee not wearing anything. Made me cringe every time.

I've tossed two bikes at over 80 mph, and because of my gear I have walked away with ZERO injuries, not a scratch, bruise or bump. Both bikes were a total loss, nothing worth saving. Proper riding gear also saved my fathers life; search "Mike Dawes" on this forum and read all about it. I don't care if I look like my favorite racer, and I could care less if I look cool. If the only color gear came in was hot pink, call me "Molly Ringwald" A cruiser will grind you into hamburger just as easily as sportbike.

But I believe there is crash in everyones future all the time, no matter how many times they've crashed before. Crashing is a part of riding, expect it. Then do what you can to increase your chances of surviving it.

| Glad to hear it. Summer here is really hot, but its only uncomfortably hot for about 2 months. You can always just take a little break from riding when its too hot to ride with your gear, alot of people do it. Weather.com says its supposed to drop into the 90's this weekend :) | |

broc lee, i don not like your outlook on, RIDING FREE. you might as well douse yourself with gasoline and set yourself on fire. then see how free you are, when your running in circles trying to put yourself out. thats what road rash feels like. yeah you have been lucky, but dont get cocky.

I used to ride in shorts and t-shirt because "it's more comfortable and too hot for gear". That was before I wrecked, and got lucky with very little road rash, and before I realized you actually dehydrate more when your clothes don't absorb the sweat. I'd be a hypocrite to say don't ever leave w/o jeans and jacket because if I'm riding to and from work, which is very close to home but still no excuse not to suit up, I wear long sleeves and jeans but no jacket. With the exception of today's Death Valley ride I always wear jeans and a riding jacket when doing group rides. But to me it always comes down to the fact that it's your body and you can do whatever you want to it as long as it doesn't put anyone else in danger. Damn that got long-winded! lol

Okay this is going to be abstract but describe my crashes since i started riding, since I far from wear gear =/ Let me first start, Wearing gear is the SMART way to go. 1st 35mph, Side Swipe, Car involved, T-shirt, Shorts, Shoes, No gloves. --- No road rash, broken back, compressed L2, unstable spine for life. No other rash or injuries. 2nd: 45mph, Side Swipe, Car Involved, Sweat Shirt, Pants, Boots, Race Gloves. --- Very mild road rash on legs, kneee injuries, including break and torn meniscus, no other rash or injuries. 3rd: 45mph, Road conditions, No car involved, Laid bike down. Tshirt, Pants, Boots, Gloves. --- No road rash. Broke ankle, rib, knee. No other rash or injuries. 4th: 35mph, Flipped an endo, No car involved. T-shirt, shorts, shoes, gloves. --- Rash on knees, arms, legs. Still minor. No other rash or injuries. 5th: 3mph, Front Brake locked up. No helmet, T-shirt, pants, gloves, shoes. --- Twisted knee, sore knee, road rash on knee. No other rash or injuries. 6th: 60mph, Flipped an endo, No car involed. JACKET, pants, shoes, gloves. --- Broken Tibia, rash on leg/knee. No other rash or injuries. This is to just kind of show, MY HISTORY. I do not wear gear all the time for city riding. I ALWAYS wear gear on a sportbike for canyon riding, sometimes even a full suit. I suggest gear.

Man, sorry to hear that. My biggest fear about riding... not the road rash, not the broken bones, not losing my life... My biggest fear is becoming paralyzed. I like increasing my odds of riding home after a crash or at least spending minimal downtime after a crash, with that said i wear my gear.
