...and he's buying his 1st bike. He has completed the motorcycle safety course and is all set up with insurance and gear. You wander through the accessories as he signs the final paperwork and the salesman rolls his new bike out to the front.

He throws his leg over, grabs the clutch and hits the starter. With a smile through his helmet he turns to you and asks "Any last minute advice?"

And you say....

If he's ready to pull away and still needs "last minute" newbie advice, I'd tell him to turn it off and walk back in and return it.

Respect your limits. Respect the bike. Take it easy for the first 150 miles to wear in the tires. Cover the controls. In an emergency, the clutch is your best friend.

Ride your own ride and look out for cars, because they don't return the favor.

Here, let me do you a favor. I'll scrub in the tires, bed the brakes, break in the engine, and work out any "bugs" that it might have come with from the dealer.

You're welcome

Kiss your tank and helmet daily..... shows respect and gets embedded in your mind. Take it easy. Pretend no one can see you and drive accordingly. Proove nothing. Enjoy your privilage and others around you.

Kinda but who cares !

Some people in the motorcycle community disagree with this statement (at least the take it easy for 150 miles part).

+ 1 on the tires, the dealership should aways warn you about how slick those tires can be, especially if you're a new rider.

+100 about the gear!

I might add you should find an empty parking lot nearby and just get use to the bike if you insist riding it home. Get use to the clutch and throttle controls and response. Practice braking, stop n go, etc. yada yada yada.
