Trying to clean up the tail on my 600RR and need to relocate the plate. Is it likely I'll run into law enforcement problems without a tag light?

I'm not even sure if the law varies state to state, so my question could be pointless. Regardless, anyone here ever gotten a ticket for not lighting up your tag?

Yes you are required to have a light(per police man). i used led light screws from ebay. fit perfectly in the license holes...

and ive gotten a ticket for everything that involves a license plate infraction...

I've argued this one many times... no, you're not explicitly required to have a light on a motorcycle. But, in order to minimize harassment, get one.

You are NOT required to have a license plate light in any state. However, you are required to have you license plate be visable from the rear at all times. So if it is night out and your license plate cant be seen, you can get a ticked for your plate not being visable from the rear.

Every passenger car, bus and truck under 80 inches in overall width must be equipped with a lamp so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear registration or license plate and render it clearly legible from a distance of 50 feet to the rear.

Eric's right. I couldn't find anything regarding lighting of a license plate on a motorcycle. Better to be safe than sorry. But for future reference...

Jimmy, is your light white or blue? It appeared to me that they were blue when I saw them on your bike. I just went to Autozone to get the same thing and they said that they had to pull the blue ones off the shelf because they are illegal in this state. I guess the cops had an issue with them. But under the NRS for motorcycles, I think that you are allowed to have a blue light on the back of a motorcycle.

So Autozone only sells the white ones. I guess I can order it online or ride to St. George and get them.

Standard LED Lights look very blue in pictures/video. They are at about 6000K, standard bulbs are 3200K. In English...they are bluer than standard bulbs

Awesome reply Pat!

No Kenny mine are white, like Pat said they're LED's so they have a "blue-ish" tint. Doesn't help that the bike is blue, so the reflected light would be blue-er than say a black bike with LEDs.

Autozone is tha shiz-niz for those lights, just put one on another bike today!

Regarding the "blue light". You are allowed to have a "Blue Dot" (no larger than 1" dia) in the middle of your taillight. If you follow a motor-cop, they have them. They do actually make the bike more visible.

But the plate light must be white (argue the color temp and see how far that gets you to a cop). Turn signals must be yellow/amber. and stop lights/running lights must be red. And each has to have a minimum distance to be able to be seen.

Sorry to disagree, but I'm pretty sure running lights can also be amber/yellow. From what I recall 100% of stock bikes with running lights are amber/yellow in color.

All tail lights (running lights) are red. At least mine are. Then brighten when braking (dual filament clear bulbs inside red taillight housing)

As for extra running lights, for Semi's I know that running lights on the sides must be yellow/amber, but all lighting to the rear (running/brake lighting) must be red.

Correct, I was agreeing with the Red Tail lights, disagreeing when you said running lights must be red also.

edit: I see what you ment by stop/running lights. Cause it stays red, just gets brighter when brake is applied.

They (Metro's Police Motorcycle) actually have TWO blue lights about one inch in diameter. I came up from behind "fast" on purpose to check it out myself this evening on my way back home from work. Does that mean we can have two as well? I read the NRS 486-261 which says you are allowed to have a blue insert no larger than 1" in diameter. Doesn't specifically say one.

Motorcycle Cops can also lanesplit, but that doesn't me we can do do the same.

When it comes to the blue lights, it's all about how the officer decides to interpret the NRS. Thinking that you're right isn't gonna stop you from being hassled.

You can have one per bulb. If they have a single lens, but two bulbs, then you can have two blue dots. That's how I interpret it though.
