I Ride: Nothing...yet
Hi everyone,
I currently don't have my M license or bike yet, but plan to change that in the next two months. I'm planning on doing the CSN class on May 29-31 with 2 friends and getting a bike shortly after that. I was hoping I could find someone knowledgeable willing to accompany me when I do look at bikes (private sellers) so that I make sure I'm not getting ripped off, getting my money's worth, etc.

That's pretty much it. Just thought I'd say hi and introduce myself. Hope to be seeing you all shortly.

I'm looking for something a little older, like a 94 ninja 600 or something. I want something that I can not feel too bad about when I drop (because I'm sure that will happen eventually). Then in a year or two, when I've got a couple thousand miles under my belt I'll look into getting something nicer. Like a new model cbr or something. We'll see when the time comes.

Welcome and definitely start with a 600. Easier to learn on not to mention like you said, it'll probably get dropped, even if it's just at a stand still. Definitely take the class if you don't have the experience yet.

Welcome to the obsession... and the site. You can drop me a line once you're ready to pull the trigger on a new-to-you bike. You have a great beginner's mindset and this helps tremendously!

Just curious if you happen to work in the cafeteria at IGT? I was talking with a guy there that sounds alot like you with the class schedule and everything

Okay, you maybe new to motorcycling, but you certainly have a great strategy. As VegasEric has said, you certainly have a great mindset Buying a motorcycle from a private seller, you are absolutiely right. Unless you know what to look for, you are much better off bring somebody who does.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate all the support you guys have given me.

I was reading around some more and there's a lot of people suggesting a smaller bike for a first. Like a 500 or less. I think I can handle a 600, but again I'm still very new to all of this. What do you guys think?

Well... it depends.

I'm a diehard SV650 fan, but the older 600's like the 94 Ninja you mentioned earlier aren't too bad. Keep in mind that once you get some miles under your belt, your experience may push you in the direction of buying something other than a 600 Supersport-class bike. But again, IMHO a used, naked SV650 is the perfect starter ride. It has enough power to keep you entertained well after you take off your training wheels per se. And the smooth, linear power delivery makes learning to ride an enjoyable experience.

Another bike you may want to look into is what I ride, the Yamaha FZ6. Really wouldn't call it a starter bike, but it's a great intermediate bike. Get this bike, there will be no need to upgrade to anything else for a long time.

Just like the Suzuki SV650, it's half faired and half naked. A nice combo. But the FZ is an inline 4 vs a twin on the SV. Plus the FZ has the cool undertail exhaust. It has a bit of an upright riding position, so it makes it easier on those long rides and you have greater visiblity in traffic. Still plenty fast, with just a shade under 100hp. My top speed was 152 on the speedo, and had more to go.

The 2009 FZ6 is different, it's called the FZ6R, totally redesigned, and has changed from an intermediate bike to more of a starter sportsbike with full fairing and less hp.
