Her nails were red - and so was the light.

Police in a Chicago suburb say a driver failed to stop at a red light because she was painting her finger nails, causing a fatal accident with a motorcyclist.

The driver, Lora Hunt, 48, slammed into Anita Zaffke, 56, in Lake Zurich, about 40 miles north of Chicago. Zaffke was stopped at the light when Hunt's Chevy Impala struck the motorcycle from behind at a high speed, police said

Hunt told police she was painting her nails as she drove and didn't see Zaffke until after the crash.

Zaffke - who was wearing a helmet - was thrown several hundred feet from her bike. She died of chest and abdominal injuries about an hour after the crash, police said.

Hunt was also hospitalized for non life-threatening injuries. She was cited with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, but more serious charges are pending.

"There should be charges against the woman in the very near future," said Lake County sheriff Scott Morrison.

Watch behind you definitely and check your mirrors. I had a near miss on the 215 this afternoon. In a line of traffic moving at speed, I saw a car about 10 cars ahead of me hit his brakes, I saw the chain reaction and move to the right edge of my lane. I looked in my mirror and saw a white lexus that wasn't going to stop. I pulled forward and to the right of the car in front of me, finally ending up next to his right rear tire. The lexus was almost touching the rear bumper of the car I pulled next to.

Case in point, always look for an out and know that you can't let your guard down.

Wow, this was another topic of conversation on Tuesday. Because of us being rear-ended, Leslie is always checking the mirrors even in the car/truck at a red light.

I don't blame her. After over $1M in surgeries from 1 rear-end accident, if we would have been on the bikes, this story would surely have been us.

this is why i'm always watching traffic behind me at red lights until i have 2 or 3 stopped behind me.

she'll be charged with a gross misdemeanor probably. probation and a stiff fine if we're lucky. They never press for murder or even manslaughter charges unless you can prove intent. They always get off easy because it's an "accident".

Not to sound sour but unless it was a DUI or a hit and run or some other type of additional crime, they probably won't do crap. It gets old hearing it time and again when sombody dies because of someone elses stupidity. I agree she needs/deserves more, but I'd be very surprized if she got more than probation unless she has a prior history of the same behavior. So sick of it.

Not that it would've helped this poor guy, but this is the reason I always split lanes here in CA where it's legal so I'm protected by the cars next to me and don't have to worry about the dumbass behind me not seeing me. Between the dumbass driver's and the heat, I wish they'd make lane splitting legal in NV.

This is where law needs to act fast and make her spend every wakeing moment looking at the pictures of the acendent that she caused before she is put to death for she has done and then have her family look at the pictures as well to tell the world what her family member has done. Then have her family pay 30 million $$$ for life don't care how they do it just get it done
