Just heard about a fatal motorcycle accident on Rainbow between Russel and Hacienda on the radio. That would put it near Motocafe.

The word I got was that the rider was male, and that he was riding a cruiser.

Motorcyclist killed in three-vehicle collision
Other vehicles were a pickup truck and a semi truck pulling two trailers

A 36-year-old man riding a 2001 Yamaha motorcycle was killed today in a collision involving a 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck and a 2006 Kenworth semi truck pulling two trailers, Metro Police said.

Authorities have not yet identified the motorcyclist killed in the the crash, which occurred about 7 a.m., said Officer Barbara Morgan, a spokeswoman for Metro Police. The Clark County Coroner's Office will release the man's identity and cause of death.

Rainbow Boulevard was shut down in both directions between Russell Road and Hacienda Avenue for hours, until police investigators completed their work at the scene.

Evidence at the scene and witness statements indicate that the Dodge, driven by 74-year-old Joseph Girola of Las Vegas, was going south on Rainbow in the far left travel lane, police said.

The semi truck was also going south on Rainbow in the center travel lane, police said.

The Yamaha motorcycle was behind the Dodge as traffic going south came to a stop, police said. The motorcycle failed to stay upright, falling on its right side when both rider and the Yamaha slid into the rear of the Dodge pickup, striking it, police said.

The rider fell off the Yamaha, and the man and motorcycle slid into the center lane and under the second trailer where the rider was run over by the truck's rear wheels, police said.

The Yamaha was dragged a short distance before coming to rest, police said.

This is the 63rd traffic-related death this year in Metro Police jurisdiction. This collision remains under investigation by Metro's Accident Investigation Section.

news just said that speed was a factor. The photos look kind of like a Harley or a Roadstar. They said the bike was rapidly approaching a truck he ended up going down and was then run over by a semi! RIP

+1, As speed may have been a factor, I'm sure not having your head and eyes up had something to do with it.

Remember to freaking Swerve! Most of the time, that's going to be our only option as many of us will be following too closely anyways. This is one of the reasons why I like to favor riding either in the very left or right portion within my lane, you're able to avoid the vehicle thats directly in front of you a lot easier in the event you have to swerve.

RIP

This saved me a couple of times. Plus, for some reason I found people behind me saw me better since I was DIRCTLY in the drivers path...

This is horrible news. It was definitely an avoidable tragedy. That doesn't help the riders families who are, I am sure, very grief stricken. It reinforces the need to be 100% alert while riding.

In addition to being able to swerve easier, you are correct; Riding directly behind the driver allows yourself to be seen by the driver in both mirrors. Not only the rear view mirror, but the side mirror too. I stress both these strategies everytime I teach a class.

Ironically, this crash was right in front of Spring Valley Hospital.

Zactleee..When ya think YOU have all the angles covered its time to be extra vigilant! Gotta keep that chin up (unless youre goin though the windscreen right roadblock?)and eyes moving...we all get "the droops". Check it out next time ya ride..seriously LOOK
how far down the road your eyes are FOCUSED and how the position of your head and chin effect your overall field of vision.
