It was bumper to bumper traffic during rush hour tonight heading NB on the 95. There was a wreck ahead with emergency vehicles on the left portion of the highway, near where the HOV begins.

Meanwhile, before we get to the accident. A white car rear ends a SUV with small children in he back seat. The force of the impact was significant enough to push the SUV into the back of the motorcylist, a cruiser. Bike and rider goes down immediately.

I told the drivers of the two vehicle who where involved who were assisting the rider to keep him down and DO NOT REMOVE his helmet untill medical crew arrives.

This is a perfect example why I wish lane splitting/filterig were legal During bumper to bumper traffic, it's best to keep the rider moving besides the vehicles rather than being sandwiched between the vehicles. Just because the vehicle behind you sees you, doesn't guarantee that the vehicle or vehicles behind them won't rear end them causing them to rear end you.

Of course, even though there was significant damages to the two vehicles, the drivers and passengers were fine. The rider on the othe hand is going to get a ride in an ambulance with lights and siren.

This is also a reason why I limit my commuting in Vegas. In some situations, there is simply nothing you can do but be a victim.

When I took the MSF course they said that when they allowed lane splitting in Cali, that the death toll of motorcyclists went down pretty dramatically...

This is correct. A very in depth study was done regarding this practice, and that is the result of their study. In addition, The California Highway Patrol even endorses lane splitting. When done correctly, and all the road users are aware that this practice exhists, it is safer for everyone.

I have split lanes in Cali every time I was there and so long as you follow the basic rules I have not seen any mishaps or even near misses. What you do see is drivers checking their mirrors before they change lanes. That's something I rarely see here. What I do see is cell phones mashed to heads with no left-side vision.
