Huh... having grown up with a brother who has a Harley and actually HAS the sticker on his helmet... and having been a former Harley owner with loud pipes myself... my vote is NO. Because I have been aware of this farce for a good part of my life, I really watch for motorcycles and listen for pipes. My experience tells me that the sound comes out the back of the bike and the ONLY time I ever hear loud pipes is when the bike is in front of me or right next to me, whether on bike or in cage. If a bike is in back of me or next to me, but slightly behind, I do not hear them. So, if you think being heard while riding in front of someone helps save you, then maybe you're right and loud pipes DO save lives. My feeling is, if you're in front of the person, they already see you and your loud pipes are most likely an annoyance. My bike is stock and quiet and I do not have issues with people cutting me off ... there is no substitute for safe, sane riding. Give people room, ride sane, and they will like you more if you are quiet. Just my two cents!!

I ride every day of the work week. For the past 6+ years, 2 years on a 01 750 and 4 on the 05 750.

stock pipes 01 750 and part of the first year of my 05-750 = people merging into me everyday. constant fuck yous given and words exchanged daily.

In the almost 4 years I have had this shorty exhaust, I have not had 1 person merge into me like they would with out the exhaust. I have had people cut me off from offramps, on ramps, multplie lane roads when people fly across 2 lanes...etc.. But i have never been accidentally or purposely cutoff by the car directly to either side of me in the 4 years i have been on the streets with the shorty.

And I agree with you nay sayers. A loud pipe should never replace your good riding habits, checking blind spots being an all round safe rider etc. But when you are cut off daily by ignorant drivers and distracted drivers...then..when you pull up along side of someone and they purposely merge to get away from you and or acknowledge you are right next to them just by hearing your bike is worth the investment of having louder pipes.

Well as a "Former member or the loud pipe club"....

I will add my .02! Nothing will make up for rider experience and good judgement! Just think about this before you get on your "soap box" or post links to various sites etc.....

When you are driving down the road in a car or a bike, does a bike with loud pipes "sneak up on you?" When you hear a bike, don't you have a tendency to look to see where it is at? If anything draws attention to you as a rider isn't that a good thing?

Ken, I agree that good riding habits are the #1 defense. Loud pipes do make a HUGE difference though. I am ALWAYS prepared for EVERY driver to cut me off, and they did when I had my stock pipes on. Those pipes were the quietest pipes I've never heard . With my Yosh pipes I haven't had 1 person cut me off. I do have wicked senses combined with superior riding skills but I love my pipes to be loud enough to get the attention of the idiots on the road when needed. As far as not hearing loud pipes behind you Karen, apparently you haven't ridden with some of the bikes I've ridden with. Example, I put a few miles on J Dubz 600 before he got rid of it, same pipes as Marcus's, and riding on the freeway cars would just move out of my way. Another example, my buddy Jim has a bike so loud I can't hear my own bike when he's 4 bikes back on the freeway.. The term "loud pipes save lives" to me means that it is a good tool to have in many situations, but without proper riding skills and knowledge, all the tools in the shed are useless.

One thing that we all can agree on is that the after market pipes draws attention because people hear them, which is a good thing.

With that in mind, why do riders ride with their earphones listening to music?

Anything to drown out the noise of traffic that might be sneaking up on you kind of defeats the loud pipe logic. Shouldn't be one sided. Same goes for earplugs. Around town with lots of traffic to deal with, I'm against the use of both. Out on the highway travelling someplace far and fast, ear plugs and or some tunes I see no harm. I use earplugs from time to time when I travel long distance.

Yes i have a loud exhaust, and i trust it for my protection as much as my horn. NOT AT ALL.

Yes they do, at times just chilling in my lane and having a bike with way freaking loud exhaust blast past me, i never noticed till they went by. IMO attention is a good and bad thing. Cagers have object fixation too.

Welp i was pretty much almost ran over tonight. So let it be said, loud pipes can HELP. But riding within your limits and always paying attention to your surroundings will save your ass way before a noisy ass pipe will

fo sho.

Sorry Arse if I jinxed ya. But just to show you that I have every confidence in the world that you and a lot of members on this forum has the ability to save your own ass when the time comes rather than relying on the loud pipes.

Job well done whatever correction action you needed to take.
