You have read the sticker and rode behind a couple of people who shall remain nameless....

Do they have any advantage when it comes to being not run over?

Fuck yes they do.

First year i rode a motorcycle in this city, I was cut off all the time. Merged into. Every day. Everytime I rode on the street. Everytime.

I put my shorty on. People hear me coming a mile away. When I'm next to people on cell phones, they actually try to get away from me because they cant hear people on the phone. When I pull up along side of a car, I can usually see the driver immediately turn there head to look to whats next to them. I swear by loud pipes. From being cut off every day, to being cut off maybe once by speeders and other jackasses merging across multiple lanes. I Have not had 1 person try to merge into me or cut me off while riding along side of me in the 4 years I have had this exhaust.

I have also had about 10 tickets (2 speeding) and no officer had ever mentioned a word about the noise.

There's my opinion and actual rider experience to go with it.

I know when I'm driving and I hear a bike, I start looking to see where it is.

People hear my bike. I see them look all around and they see me so they know I am there. Most of the time they will change lanes if I am behind them.

Yeah, my Bostrom Bros 4-2-1 Race Exhaust is pretty freaking loud and obnoxious, but it saves my life daily.

they save lives until you are beside them in a parking lot, and they are being revved loudly for no reason into your conversation with someone on your cell about your timing belt breaking right now, and about how you are freaking out about how to get your car home so you can fix it... and the jackhole revving sees your hood up and you frantically talking into the phone and crying because youre freaking out... then you rip the pipes off the bike, beat that asshole to death with them, and shove them down his throat.

but otherwise, they seem to work well. and obviously, no animosity there in the story of my broken tbelt...

loud pipes are great to get attention. You have to take in consideration that everything has a positive side and a negative side. On the positive side, people will hear you, most likely look at you and you have achieved your goal. On the negative side, in the hands of the wrong misguided rider, it can be very annoying and lead to trouble!!

no, sadly, that was just the fantasy circling through my head as i was doing the aforementioned freaking out.

i also forgot to mention that it was raining like a cow pissing on a flat rock and he was helmetless, like all good harley riders in arizona. so, i have to admit, it was the first time i have ever wished harm on a motorcyclist. hopefully for him he didnt crash in the slippery, oil laden road on the way to home. although, as an afterthought, i havent seen him riding around again...

Indeed, I do. I bought this a little over a month ago on the 1-payment plan.

I never rode a Harley until I rode this one home. And then I wondered why I didnt do this sooner.

It's actually pretty quiet and its the smoothest bike I've ever ridden, except when idling - it shakes quite a bit when idling. ABS, security system, cruise control, AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo (with upgraded speakers + amp), fuel injection, air shocks, throttle by wire, 6 speed tranny, lots of cool shit.

Before people bark about 'antiquated technology' I can say that this bike gets me from point A to point B just as well as any other bike I've owned, and I've owned many. The hit and finish is just as good as any Honda I've owned, and the paint quality is the best I've seen on a stock bike. The fuel milage is better than I expected, about 8 - 10 mpg better than my ST1300. As long as you're having fun, it doesnt matter if your engine is air cooled and still has pushrods. Thats all part of the experience.

The dealership experience at Red Rock Harley Davidson is the absolute best I've had. I've already bought a few accessories for it and everytime, they say "We got one of those in stock, be right back" and then they offer to install it, and since I dont like other people touching my bikes they then at least try to explain the installation. Everyone there is very courteous and knowledgeable about the products they sell.

Only thing I dont like, is when I pull into a place and some other Harley guys are there, they look up like they just got a new friend and riding buddy. Thats great and everything, but I'm just not that sociable and I dont really like riding in groups.

I was about to just give up riding because it hasnt been fun to me for quite a while, but now I'm glad I decided to try one last thing before I quit.

NO.

Your mental knowledge of what you can expect on the road you are on and how you react mentally along with your riding skill which requires some sort of correctve action will save your life. Like swerving, braking or even using the horn. And of course, your very last defence, your safety gear.

I agree 100%, a loud pipe will help you get noticed just like wearing bright colors. It's an aid, and you can use it to your advantage. I do it on a daily basis. As some say, in a parking lot, riding next to another vehicle. I wouldn't want to ride without loud pipes. But if you think that your loud pipes will save your life, I think you're wrong.

It's you as a rider will be the determining factor if you are able to save yourself.

My .02

Huh... having grown up with a brother who has a Harley and actually HAS the sticker on his helmet... and having been a former Harley owner with loud pipes myself... my vote is NO. Because I have been aware of this farce for a good part of my life, I really watch for motorcycles and listen for pipes. My experience tells me that the sound comes out the back of the bike and the ONLY time I ever hear loud pipes is when the bike is in front of me or right next to me, whether on bike or in cage. If a bike is in back of me or next to me, but slightly behind, I do not hear them. So, if you think being heard while riding in front of someone helps save you, then maybe you're right and loud pipes DO save lives. My feeling is, if you're in front of the person, they already see you and your loud pipes are most likely an annoyance. My bike is stock and quiet and I do not have issues with people cutting me off ... there is no substitute for safe, sane riding. Give people room, ride sane, and they will like you more if you are quiet. Just my two cents!!

I ride every day of the work week. For the past 6+ years, 2 years on a 01 750 and 4 on the 05 750.

stock pipes 01 750 and part of the first year of my 05-750 = people merging into me everyday. constant fuck yous given and words exchanged daily.

In the almost 4 years I have had this shorty exhaust, I have not had 1 person merge into me like they would with out the exhaust. I have had people cut me off from offramps, on ramps, multplie lane roads when people fly across 2 lanes...etc.. But i have never been accidentally or purposely cutoff by the car directly to either side of me in the 4 years i have been on the streets with the shorty.

And I agree with you nay sayers. A loud pipe should never replace your good riding habits, checking blind spots being an all round safe rider etc. But when you are cut off daily by ignorant drivers and distracted drivers...then..when you pull up along side of someone and they purposely merge to get away from you and or acknowledge you are right next to them just by hearing your bike is worth the investment of having louder pipes.

Well as a "Former member or the loud pipe club"....

I will add my .02! Nothing will make up for rider experience and good judgement! Just think about this before you get on your "soap box" or post links to various sites etc.....

When you are driving down the road in a car or a bike, does a bike with loud pipes "sneak up on you?" When you hear a bike, don't you have a tendency to look to see where it is at? If anything draws attention to you as a rider isn't that a good thing?

Ken, I agree that good riding habits are the #1 defense. Loud pipes do make a HUGE difference though. I am ALWAYS prepared for EVERY driver to cut me off, and they did when I had my stock pipes on. Those pipes were the quietest pipes I've never heard . With my Yosh pipes I haven't had 1 person cut me off. I do have wicked senses combined with superior riding skills but I love my pipes to be loud enough to get the attention of the idiots on the road when needed. As far as not hearing loud pipes behind you Karen, apparently you haven't ridden with some of the bikes I've ridden with. Example, I put a few miles on J Dubz 600 before he got rid of it, same pipes as Marcus's, and riding on the freeway cars would just move out of my way. Another example, my buddy Jim has a bike so loud I can't hear my own bike when he's 4 bikes back on the freeway.. The term "loud pipes save lives" to me means that it is a good tool to have in many situations, but without proper riding skills and knowledge, all the tools in the shed are useless.

One thing that we all can agree on is that the after market pipes draws attention because people hear them, which is a good thing.

With that in mind, why do riders ride with their earphones listening to music?

Anything to drown out the noise of traffic that might be sneaking up on you kind of defeats the loud pipe logic. Shouldn't be one sided. Same goes for earplugs. Around town with lots of traffic to deal with, I'm against the use of both. Out on the highway travelling someplace far and fast, ear plugs and or some tunes I see no harm. I use earplugs from time to time when I travel long distance.

Yes i have a loud exhaust, and i trust it for my protection as much as my horn. NOT AT ALL.

Yes they do, at times just chilling in my lane and having a bike with way freaking loud exhaust blast past me, i never noticed till they went by. IMO attention is a good and bad thing. Cagers have object fixation too.

Welp i was pretty much almost ran over tonight. So let it be said, loud pipes can HELP. But riding within your limits and always paying attention to your surroundings will save your ass way before a noisy ass pipe will

Sorry Arse if I jinxed ya. But just to show you that I have every confidence in the world that you and a lot of members on this forum has the ability to save your own ass when the time comes rather than relying on the loud pipes.

Job well done whatever correction action you needed to take.
