Weird, I don't remember editing my post!

Hello fellow adrenaline junkies! My name is Ryan, I am 25 and I am currently deployed to Afghanistan with the Nevada Army National Guard. I will be returning in April and plan on buying a brand new bike to spoil myself after spending a year in this hell hole! I started off riding with a 1995 Ninja ZX6R and road that for about two years without any sort of four wheel transportation. That was a crazy move on my part (impractical!), but also the best choice I ever made. Now I have a huge passion for motorcycles and riding is pretty much all I think about over here. I lived in Vegas for a little over a year before being deployed, but during that time I tooled around on my roommates SV1000. Because of work and the upcoming deployment I had little time to ride. I was in a few bike clubs/organizations before I moved and I'm hoping to meet some like minded riders in the Vegas area. My biggest thing is being responsible on the road and riding with adult minded motorcyclists. I also want to get into track riding and it looks like you guys have some experienced riders within your ranks. Right now I am battling with what bike I want to get. I have my eyes set on the new Aprilia RSV4, but after taking a year+ hiatus I'm not sure it would be the best fit. I guess I wont know the answer to that until I get home and take a test ride at pat clark motorsports. At any rate, thanks for having me and I hope to see you at some bike meets in a few months :)

a bit more about myself....

I worked for Clark county, but resigned before deploying. I plan on going back to school to finish my psychology degree. I'm also going to be starting a personal business in photography in addition to whatever my boring day job ends up being. Has anyone here taken any classes at CSN or UNLV?

I suggest you get a 600 and get used to riding it frequently for a few months.
Then hit a trackday with a beginners class.

A few of us try to go to as many trackdays as possible, and are always willing to help others make it out to the track.

Both... but way back when. UNLV Class of 1996. (did it while I was in the USAF)

First of all:

Thank you for your service! Stay safe and be careful over there.

Once you get back, might be a good idea to take a riding refresher course at CSN. You can even register online. Whether its the basic rider course or expereinced riders course. But you would need your own bike for the expereince course. Unfortunately, there has been too many men coming back from deployment hopping back on their bikes thinking that they can't get hurt or killed once their back in the states. After dodging bullets, bombs and IED's, they forget that collisions with vehicles or other objects on the road can have the same results.

Hey guys, thanks for the warm welcome. In regards to the 600, I just don't have a strong passion for any of the current Japanese bikes. I am however considering a Ducati 848/Triumph 675 because I have not ridden in a year. I will be test riding the RSV and the other bikes after I take a refresher MSF course and will make my decision based on how comfortable I am on each bike. I may even buy an older 600 and make it a dedicated track bike in addition to the RSV. I really want to get into one of the track schools at the speedway.

Those are great choices, as I ride a 600 myself.

In my honest opinion, most people who have liter bikes probably don't have the skills & abilities to ride it to it's full potential. Not saying that they don't have skill and ability to ride, but getting the most out of the bike.

Sorry if I offended any of you guys & gals who have a 1000.

Unless you're doing track days or racing, riding any bike to its full potential is a very risky proposition.

Very true, track days. But you still see many holding on to their dear life out on the streets. Pretty big displacement from 600 & 1000.

The RSV4R is a sexy, Fast bike. If you go that route, keep it in rain mode for a while to get use to the power. That V4 will knock you for a loop if you aren't careful.

I'll tell you what, that 675 looks pretty hot in that Caspian blue. I would have to take off all of those god awful stickers of course. I agree most people can't push a 600 let alone a 1000 to it's limits. However, I do strongly believe a 1000 to be a better street bike. There is also no question that I would benefit from riding a middleweight at the track since I am new to racing. That's why I am so interested in the 848 and 675 in particular...they both have awesome torque bands for both the street and track and are still quite manageable bikes. Plus you've just got to love the sound of that triple or twin engine. Giggity! I'll tell you what I am most concerned about: Comfort! I will most likely buy whatever bike I feel most confident on and the bike with the best ergo's for my body. I hear the 675 is a torture rack and then some say it is just fine. I have not sat on one. The 848 and RSV sound like they would fit me well after reading a lot of reviews and owner comments on the various forums. The guys at pat clark motor sports have offered to set up a test ride on all three bikes when I return home. I should be able to make an educated decision thanks to them. I couldn't imagine buying a bike without riding it first.

Lost Sheep, do you have a website with any of your photography work? What type of camera and lenses do you have? I just have the entry level Nikon D40 and the kit lens. I didn't want to get too crazy bringing a nicer camera to a warzone. I love it though and plan to keep it even if I take the plunge and buy the D700 when I come home. I think it will be a great backup body.

After thinking quite a bit the last few days I think I am going to go with one of the two middleweight bikes since I really want to get deeply into track riding. For the price of the RSV4 out the door I could buy both the Ducati and the Triumph, dedicating one to the track. Thanks for the input everyone! The only problem isnow I might have to change my forum name haha!
