This is kinda hard to describe without a picture, but I was wondering why the middle of the lanes at an intersection have the deposits of asphalt. Like the sections where a car's tires are is perfectly fine and flat, but theres that mound of bumpy misshapen asphalt right in the center. It's especially bad at the southbound 215 Charleston exit ramp.

Im guessing from all the fluids that leak from cars over time degrade and dissolve the asphalt? This is why you never ride in the middle of the lane, always straddle it. Either to the left or the right of the lane.

| That's what I originally thought, but if you look it's above the asphalt. Like the rest of the lane is smooth and there's more stuff on top. If the oil/fluids/battery acid of cars was deteriorating the road, it would be below the line and you would see dips.

I think you are saying that the asphalt is actually bulging upwards between the lanes? if so, this is because it gets super soft in the summer sun and the heavy trucks make ruts in the asphalt.

You may be seeing concrete or asphalt that fell from the trucks at the time it was stopped at a light or for traffic. You used to see this all the time when construction was hot and heavy in the Valley. A concrete truck would have just a little left over concrete in the chute and the driver was to lazy to scrap it out. So when the truck came to a stop at a light it would fall out and harden in the middle of the driving lane. Because the traffic would smash and flatten the concrete in the driving lane you dont see it there, but the middle is less traveled and it would harden in the road. Same applies to the Asphalt it all boils down to lazy Truck Drivers.

Uh, no. It is because cars weigh alot, and what you are really observing is ruts in the pavement from the weight of vehicles. Over time (and it does not take very long in this heat) the repeated weight of the vehicles rolling over the pavement in certain spots pushes the heated and soft pavement down and the middle up(kinda like cookie dough). As the middle bulges up, you start seeing first the cracks in the asphalt, then accumulating deposts of various types of road debris and dirt. Remember the oils and cracks can act like a glue of sorts. With it being at an intersection the vehicles are moving slower so there is less chance of wind clearing the dirts and junk away, so there is often more build-up at the said intersection. Combine this with the cracks in the bulges, the leaking oils and fluids from passing cars and fewer winds, it starts to just create a caked-on looking substace that is not asphalt.

Sometimes, people like things spelled out for them. Besides, it is more like a combination of the explanations in a way that made sense, not just yours. | |

Yep, the weight of the vehicles flattens out the tire track areas... This is mostly due to cheap construction of the road... They save money by not properly making the base layer so it doesnt sink in...

I know exactly what he is talking about... and it isnt the rutting from cars... I noticed this right when i moved here a few weeks ago... Its like someone took a shovel full of asphault and threw it into the street... and my only guess would be from construction vehicles carrying concrete or asphault stopping for an intersection, then accelerating and some of the stuff falls from the truck. In denver, had a glob land on my bumper once and i wasnt too happy. I have noticed it around other bumps in the roads too. - Justin
