Someone went down in Utah. I know what you're all thinking, but surprisingly it wasn't Tom. It finally happened. Red Lightning has touched ground. Coming out of Bryce Canyon there's a really sharp, downhill left hander. I did almost everything wrong. Lecture away. I deserve it. I was going in too fast. I turned in too early. I began going wide and I looked at the side of the road instead of through the turn, and instead of going full on knee dragger, as I got to the edge of the road I choked, straightened the bike and grabbed brake. The only thing I did right was not braking while leaned over. The front fairing is demolished, left blinker gone, mirror needs to be replaced. The left side fairing isn't too bad, I think I'll keep it that way. The shifter lever got a little bent but still works fine. I took a nose dive into the rocks and decimated my visor, and my helmet has lots of beauty marks now. Pictures below. So I checked on eBay, the new fairing is going to be $200, and the mirrors, turn signal, wind screen and visor I'm gonna get at cycle gear. If I may pat myself on the back, I'm awesome at crashing. The shoulder bumper took all of the damage, my jacket and pants are fine (a bit dusty, but not ripped). It had to happen some time ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And it was such a beautiful day too ![]() The way I look at it, it was just a $200 lesson. As many times as I've been told "Just lean more, don't straighten it" apparently my subconscious didn't believe you. Lesson learned.

Glad you're ok, especially after seeing the helmet damage. So what happened after you grabbed brake? Did the bike go into a ditch and throw you? Trying to understand how you nosedive. I'm sure you realize this now, but you really don't want your first time doing an aggressive lean angle to be in an emergency situation. Oh well, at least you know what you need to practice more. Side note - when you can regulary crash without a scratch, then you'll be on my level.

| I hit the dirt, grabbed the brake and fell forward to the left while the bike slid out to the right... I think. It was kinda fast, as crashes tend to be.

| Ah... As much as you hear "Don't use your front brake in a runoff" it's hard to remember that in he moment. Any pictures of the turn and crash site?

The crash could not have happen at a better place because if he would have crashed about ten feet farther he would have gone over the mountain!

| Upper Fairing was 180 on eBay. Other than that turn signal, wind screen and mirrors from cycle gear and I'm good as new.

Sounds like you are ok. Sucks about the crash, but live and learn. These things happen, best thing to do is get back in the saddle as soon as you can.

| Yeah, i was back in the saddle about five minutes after I went down. And them I sold my car =P I'm obviously not very traumatized by the situation. Unless I'm reverse traumatized.

| I'll see you for the Thursday night ride? I'm definitly going to be more cautious, if only because of the money. But honestly right after I went down i wasnt thinking about how horrible I was feeling. I was thinking "I need to get better so this doesn't happen again"

Good attitude...about trying to get better so it doesn't happen again. Please tell me, however, that you are NOT reusing your helmet... If your shield took that much of a beating, then the helmet got stressed, even if it only has a few small battle scars on it. It still hit the ground and took a "beating" even if it was just on the shield. I would seriously replace that helmet. I know it sucks and I know helmets are expensive, but you don't want to even take the chance that you go down again in that helmet and this time it gives way and cracks in half (yes, I have seen it personally) because it was already stressed/broken inside (where you can't see it). It's not worth your life just to save a few bucks.Forget replacing the shield...replace that helmet, bro. I'd rather ride with a damaged fairing and have the bike look like complete crap, but have a new helmet on my head than fix the bike and take a chance with a helmet that hit the ground and/or slid on the ground like yours did. Just sayin'...

| Not gonna disagree, only add to the the conversation. When I went down in March at the track my head hit the pavement and chipped my helmet. I though my helmet was FUBAR. After talking to Pilot at Cycle-gear he told me Shoei had an inspection program. I sent it into Shoei and they inspected the helmet and sent it back with a certified letter stating that it was still safe for continued use. May want to see if your brand has such program. I spent $15 in shipping for peace of mind.

True...I forgot about that, Jet. Shoei does have that type of "certification" in place. If his helmet manufacturer has that, then it wouldn't hurt at all to have it checked out and if they certify it that it's good to go, then that's cool. At least then you know the proper people checked it out and gave you a thumbs up (IN WRITING) on it. Personally, I've never heard of anyone but Shoei doing it, but that doesn't mean other manufacturers don't do it. He would have to call them to see. If they don't, dump the lid and buy new. If they do, send it in and let the experts check it out. Good catch.
