So... it finally happened. They set up a trap for us tonight, all three rangers were out. Two of them got me and Sloven and one was barricading the turn before ice box in case we ran. I was lucky enough to have the wonderful Presley as my officer. He wrote me up for 53 in a 35. $225.

I'm planning on going into court to tell the judge I'm a broke-ass college student who does dumb things some times. Hopefully get it knocked down a bit. As is my understanding it does NOT go to insurance, right? Any tips for meeting the judge? I heard of one guy who claimed the speed gun was malfunctioning, and they brought it in and it was off by about .5 mph so they threw the ticket out. Should I try saying I wasn't going that fast, or should I just be honest and say I'm sorry.

Good luck fighting the "oh their gun doesn't work" method. Better have crazy proof for that.

Honesty is the best policy. Or, you could just pray that Officer Presley doesn't show up.

I could base my defense on the fact he's dyslexic! "I was going the speed limit the whole time!"

That sucks. Here are some pics to make you feel better. $225 is not bad at all, I'd be happy as hell with that considering where you got the ticket.

Look Matt, you made the news!

You're the best! And speaking of that picture.... I never signed the ticket. Do I still have to pay?

You're going to have a difficult time fighting this ticket. And in the grand scheme of things, it's really not that bad. Thankfully, it does not get reported to insurance.

FWIW... these forums could possibly be monitored by LE. Consider this when discussing any pending legal issues.

I got nabbed out at the lake once and got a $275 ticket which ended up being the force that pushed me into doing track days. Lake tickets don't go on your record, no points on your license, and no insurance increase. They're just revenue generators. I'd just be honest, pay the fine, and learn from the experience. Oh, and definitely consider Eric's advice and watch what legal issues/plans are discussed on public forums. Could bite you in the ass later.

Wouldn't doing something as simple as moving this to the NSW forum (which, correct me if I'm wrong, is only available to registered members of the site) help. Albeit it's not fool proof, as they can still register, but it would take a lot more time and effort.

They never seem to reduce a federal ticket, unless you get the ticket thrown out on a technicality.... Good luck with that.

Use this as a lesson. You can ask for payments. If you try to fight it they may raise the fine.

They could already be registered. My advice would be to save the specifics for face-to-face/PM/phone conversation. Get with Joseph (lvtrafficticketguy) and he may be able to give you some advice.

I don't believe they can raise the fine in this case when it is a set amount. Thankfully, Matt wasn't hit up for a 30+ over the limit mandatory court appearance where they give you your fine once you're there.

Your best bet if I may comment is to pay your fine.

If my memory serves me right a quote from the ranger that gave me my ticket out at lake mead when I commented I'll fight it. "All you are going to do is piss off the FEDERAL JUDGE and you'll end up paying more"

I decided not to take my chances with a Judge who has probably heard it all when it comes to speeding sportbikers out at the lake and RR

I paid my fine and cut my losses

You were speeding you got popped, be glad your bike wasn't impounded and your not in jail.

Things you don't F with DMV and Federal Government!!!!

Positive side of it is it doesnt go on your record or get reported to insurance.
Unless of course it's changed

Good Luck either way

All I know is Sunday's ride at RRC is going to be interesting when I'm going around corners and straights at 35mph. LOL

I'm sorry to hear you got nailed, but as most said...you were speeding, you got caught...pay the fine and just let it go as a learning experience. Sometimes it's not a good thing to fight.

Plus, if you think about it honestly...you did the crime, so there should be no reason to fight it. I know you don't want to hear that, but it's totally the truth.

PS Doesn't mean you have to like it though

I've only ridden out to the lake once, but isn't it two ways? Aren't there other bikes coming in the opposite direction warning you that there are cops?

Matt, stay off federal land, you're not having too much luck on these rides. Try California.

I got popped in VoF for 70 in a 35 (and a couple other things)... I showed up for court and plead No Contest to the judge and he dropped the speeding fine from $500 to $250... I paid in cash and got the hell out of there before he changed his mind...

+1. I know a few of the Rangers at the Lake. Most of em are good guys who would rather give ya a 'verbal warning" than write you a ticket BUT, the Rangers have had it with the high speed stuff so they are gonna drop the hammer and implement some "stealth tactics" to catch speeders at the lake. Cages, bikes, boats whatever if you are being reckless or speeding they will get ya. Keep in mind Lake Shore Drive and North Shore Drive have several locations where LE can see you coming for miles and then send another unit to 'ambush" you...just a thought

Bro, just take the fine and leave it. $225 ain't shit. I just paid a $195 fine for 5 over in Henderson. It's not that much if you look at it. You can also schedule a payment plan if you tell them you can't afford it. Just be happy that is all they got you for though. My friend got his bike confiscated from NHP and he went to jail after running from them for the previous night and side swiping the NHP Charger on his 636. They only caught him because of his plate number. And he is military. He finally just paid off his ticket and got his riding privileges back. This happened 10 months ago...

Pay it on a payment plan and move on. Trust me, judges use hotter stuff than Tabasco for lube. You'll be so sore you won't walk for days.

Sucks about the ticket. Look at it like that's the price you pay for the freedom to ride however you like.

I hate to sound like a RiderCoach but, keep your head up and looking where your going Matt, then you would have seen the Ranger, used proper braking techniques, and avoided a ticket. Seriously, that is why I don't ride out at RR. Too many people using it as a personal racetrack, resulting in alot of accidents, forcing rangers to take action with an end result of many speeding tickets.

Damn, I must have had a shitty MSF instructor then. You can only look so far through a blind turn. And the lasers on a radar gun are much faster than "straighten bike, then slowly, steadily apply brake"

It was only a blind turn because your eyes were closed Matt, like I told you on the range, YOU HAVE TO KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN!!! Going through a turn while your daydreaming about owning a Hayabusa just isn't good for your health bro. If you come out on the ride tonight I promise to let you touch the throttle on Crush!!
