Hello all. I joined this site a while back, but for various reasons (namely buying a new car and moving out of my parents house) I was unable to get a bike and start riding back when I had originally wanted to, so now that I'm all sorted out I'm again looking to get started riding. Its going to take me a bit to save up for a bike, but that doesn't mean I can't start learning now. A little about me. My name is David and I'm 22. I joined the Air Force as an active reservist and am stationed out here for the entirety of my career. Before I joined I was a mechanic so I know my way around a wrench, however bikes are another animal (that I really look forward to learning about). I'm browsing CL for an older 600 to learn on, so that when I drop it I don't feel that bad. I only want to spend around $1500 on my first bike so if you know of any decent 600's for around that price that would be awesome. Anyway, I look forward to meeting all of you and joining you on the street ASAP! |

Welcome to the site mang X2! Might be hard to find a well kept 600 for 1500 bucks... if you can double that you would have a much bigger selection!! Good luck!!

Sup David! Welcome aboard. This is a good place for new riders to start. There's a lot of very knowledgeable riders here. No big ego's and some of they're advice might someday save your life. CL isn't a bad place to find your 600. That's where I found my 1000RR. But just remember you get what you pay for and when it comes to CL always try to deal with cash only and locally. I have a friend that got scammed on craiglist over a custom chopper. Good luck on the bike hunt.

If you are a new rider, you need to take the BRC. The airforce offers the class, and might even be free. I think you have to take the course in order to ride on base, but I could be wrong. The community collegs CSN, offers the course for $100. A successful completion will get you an automatic M endorsement since the intructors are state certified and actually administers the testing required for you to earn your M endorsement. If you are also a returning rider, it's also recommended to take the course as a refresher course, and to remind you of all of the bad habits you have developed. You do not need a motorcycle to take this course. It is provided. As far as the bike, you should start on a smaller bike, such as a Ninja 250. It's a lot more forgiving. Take that FWIW. There's one for sale here on this forum for $3000 ish. Oh by the way, welcome.

Ok, so I've been searching CL and found some pretty good stuff for about 2-2.5K. I'm actually looking at cruisers for now. More my style and not as fast as a rocket, which is probably a good idea for my first bike. Will probably get a sport bike later though. My question is who would be willing to meet up with me when I go to look at one or more of these bikes so they can test it out properly and inspect it for things that may be wrong? Someone with real technical expertise would be nice but if you know your stuff then I'm good with that. The last thing I want is to be scammed out of my hard earned cash. And thank you all for the warm welcome. I hope to be joining you all in the next 2 months or so. |
