Nicky's Title Defense Implodes
By Dirck Edge

All those critics who crowed that Nicky Hayden was an unworthy MotoGP champion last year must now be gloating. After six rounds in 2007, Hayden lies outside the top ten in points, and seems to have no clue about how to run near the front (consistently or not) on race day.

Although Honda admits it missed the mark with its new 800, Dani Pedrosa is third in points and consistently hovers on or near the podium -- far ahead of Nicky Hayden.

It is getting too late for Hayden to mount any serious title defense as Casey Stoner (Ducati) and Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) have clearly emerged as the main title contenders for 2007.

I have to agree with this...if Vale wasn't struggling with the M1's chassis in the beginning of last season, he would have had another championship.

Yeah, Rossi had some unfortunate mechanical DNFs and tire chunking problems or he would have easily won. Nicky only won two races last year, but he was in the top 3 many times.

Nicky did the most test laps last year ahead of even rossi... He did only win two races but he was only out of the top 3 a total of three times...So if everyone else struggles rossi wins whats the difference

All I know is that he is knee deep in pussy. So, I guess he wins in the end.

Yea Nicky is having a huge problem getting his groove on with the new 800. I don't necesarily think that he was a fluke last year, given the old bikes back, I think he'd be up there again.

I still think that Rossi will take the win this year. But I do have to give huge props to Stoner. Although I still think that the Ducati shouldn't have such a huge displacement advantage. And they are still crying about the advantage of the inline-4's. Having 37% more displacement is too much. I call BS.

I give him props for being consistent last year, but it's definitely more exciting to see the person being crowned as champion actually winning races. He only won one race last year in my opinion and that was Laguna. His "win" at Assen was the result of yet more misfortune for someone else (Colin Edwards) and that doesn't count.

Another little known fact though is that Nicky was doing a ton of testing for the 800cc machine through out the year which meant he was in the hunt for the championship the whole time using untested parts. THAT does say something about the man's ability though.
