Apparantly helmets have been required for a while but they just passed a law also requiring "protective jackets, gloves, long pants and boots" for riders as well. I wonder how long it will be until the regular states follow suit. Not that it's a problem for me as I'm usually wearing safety gear all the time, just kind of surprizing to see it law. See below for a link to the article.

It's almost identical to the regulation regarding wear of gear while riding on a military installation.

Good.

And good luck getting that passed in any US state.

Good.

The Harley guy will probably burn jackets in protest though.

oh that's hiliarious.

1. if you've ever been to the island you will notice that the police aren't really into pulling bikers over, mainly because they do run.

2. i was there last summer and i didn't see anyone wearing a helmet. So Ricans def. don't listen.

3. I highly doubt riders out there during the summer will be wearing jackets and pants, most of them ride in shorts and tees.

So they can pass the law but i doubt anyone will abide by it and to the harley riders.......that's gonna be funny. Best of luck, to my island but i don't think it'll succeed.

There is only about a 10 degree difference between summer and winter there, so whats the difference? They don't listen to anything out there. My uncle was a cop for 30 years and he never listened. He always has moon shine in his fridge. But hey, it's the thought that counts right.

BTW I am all for regulating the use of proper safety gear. For one, it's the right thing to dance. Secondly, it would force alot of Hardley riders off the road and back into the bar.

That law would never become very popular stateside. There are too many instance where freedom of choice is being taken away... Slowly but surely, our constitutional rights are being swiped from us... Safety gear does not prevent accidents, all the gear in the world will not garauntee anything...

And if you pass a law that will never be upheld, why do it.. It is like making Oral sex illegal in some states..... They need to pass laws that make people think about their actions, and that is the only wy to make a difference....

Just my .02......

I, as well as alot of you, have experienced first hand that full gear sometimes makes no difference at all. However, I've also seen what the result of a non fatal or life threatening accident can be with no or little gear on. Glen used to tell me that in the summer, if you so much as fall over at a stop sign and your skin touches the asphalt when it's 112 degrees out, that you will become one with the asphalt. Road rash and broken bones can be life changing in some instances. We have seen people with bones exposed and skin graft candidates because of lack of proper gear. Most good gear has armor in the right places to prevent this.

When Glen died I had a short period of anger, beacause he was in full gear and being careful and died anyway, and felt like what's the point of full gear if it didn't save his life. Then a very close friend reminded me of what not wearing proper gear can result in, and in my opinion, he got off lucky with the scrapes he did get.

So, I guess, I'm not sure about making it law, but I do wish people would be more aware of the neccessity for proper gear. Ok done with my speach..

Please drive thru!!!!!!

Now... along these same lines we have another project underway: (shameless plug)

From http://www.cycleawareness.org/ :

M.A.R.S. Motorcycle Awareness and Rider Safety

Mission Statement
To raise public awareness of motorcycles on the road, off the road, and sharing the road responsibly. We will make every effort to promote safe and responsible riding. MARS promotes the use of proper riding gear, ongoing rider education and organizing group riding events that promote safety. As a group, we wish to become a resource for riders of all types, and ages.

Position Statements
Motorcycle/Rider types:
MARS seeks to promote and support overall rider safety. It doesn’t matter what type of motorcycle you ride, Street, Track or Dirt our goal is to support all types motorcycling.

Rider Education:
MARS believes that rider education is the only way to effectively build rider confidence and awareness. Becoming a life-long learner will positively affect rider safety making an impact for the reduction of crashes and fatalities. As a safety organization, this is one of our primary goals.

Riding Gear:
MARS always promotes the use of proper riding gear. Our plans are to compile as much research on the effectiveness and comfort of many different brands as types of gear. This will allow riders to make more educated decisions before purchasing safety gear.

Awareness:
The majority of multiple vehicle accidents are cause by an inattentive, unaware driver pulling into the path of a rider. This is a serious issue that has affected nearly everyone who rides. The use of public service channels, the media and community events, we plan to spread rider awareness to the millions of drivers who are simply not paying attention.

If you'd like to take part in these efforts, PM vegasvideo and/or keep an eye on this thread for the next meeting date/time:
