Know what's better than watching football in HD (1080i) on a 65" TV? Watching football in HD on a 65" TV for free. Samsung SIR-T165 receiver, FTW!

* Is Toshiba readying the white flag?
Toshiba officials announced today that they are reviewing their HD DVD strategy and may consider pulling the plug on the high-definition technology, although no final decision has been made, the company said. "If true, this will be good news for the next-generation DVD industry in clearing up the confusion for consumers because of the format competition that had curbed buying," said Koya Tabata, electronics analyst at Credit Suisse in Tokyo. Bloomberg (2/18) , Google/Agence France-Presse (2/18) , The New York Times/Associated Press (2/18) , PaidContent.org: The Economics of Content (2/16)

* Consumers cheer possible end of HD format war: Consumers may be the real victors of Toshiba's rumored pullout from the high-definition disc market, according to analysts. A large number of buyers have put off buying a high-def player until a clear winner emerges. Yahoo!/Reuters (2/18)

Channel 3 news reported this morning that Toshiba officially threw in the towel and will stop making HD-DVDs giving Sony the title as HD champ! It was only a matter of time since 5 major film studios all support the Blu Ray format.

I guess I'll go buy a Playstation 3 this week. If I have to get a Blu-Ray player now it may as well play videogames too.

Nice to see the superior format won out finally. And you can get a Sony Blu-Ray player for $300 nowadays.

I went to Best Buy to get a PS3 today. All they have are the 40gig units, which I found out isnt backwards compatable with PS2 games.

I asked to sales guy to get me an 80gig unit, he says sony discontinued them.

Wtf? Why would I want to buy a PS3 that cant play my PS2 games? I only wanted it to play Blu-Ray movies but figured I may as well get a game system as well... but fuckit now I'm not buying one based on principle.

Sony does some really stupid shit sometimes.

Sony was having an extremely hard time getting backwards compatibility to work for a lot of games. Guess they decided to cut costs by just taking it out the PS2 emulation altogether.

And PS2s have still been selling like hotcakes... no need to ruin a good thing.

Where's the option for: Screw both of them

I'm sick of this technology crap being updated every 2 or 3 years and being expected by the whole industry to thrown all my audio/video crap away that still works fine and buy new crap just to watch a DVD.

I still got a fat-ass 27 inch non widescreen T.V. and a regular dvd player.

I guess I'll ride more when there are no dvds on the market that work with my old stuff.
