Decker Canyon - 1
Eric - 0

I'll throw the Cliff Notes up front. Took a tight right-hander (about 25-30 mph or so) a bit wide, caught some fine sand, and lowsided into a guardrail. The bike planted itself firmly into a guardrail post and I went about halfway under the guardrail. I'm relatively unscathed, except for a small bruise on my left hip.

After leaving my key on at the meetup spot and waiting for Stacy to show up, the ride Friday night to our basecamp at Josh's pad in Mission Viejo was uneventful. The next morning, we made the long trip (about 200 yds) to Starbucks for a much needed caffeine fix.

Then we made the trip to meet up with Angel and Maria at Sunset and PCH. There were an assload of bikes at the various spots around our meetup spot. It was a nice day temperature-wise, and everyone was heading out to the canyons. Nice...this was my first time at Malibu and I was excited. We then made our way up PCH to Topanga Canyon Road (kick ass!) and headed to the Rock Store. This place is a biker wet dream.

After a great breakfast and confounding the waitress by splitting the check six ways between five people , we made our way up Mulholland through some tight, tight twisties to a great scenic overlook. Josh had a slight mishap as we were pulling in, but no harm no foul. (I'll let him elaborate) Little did we know that Josh's boo-boo would be the precursor to a more substantial screw-up on my part. But right now...let's enjoy more pics:

Check out this road!

Yesssss!

Josh reflecting on his incident as we offer words of encouragement.

Now...fast foward to Decker Canyon Road. The road was a bit dirty, but not too bad. But let me tell you, this road is tight...but fun. (well, except for the crashing part) The Busa would have been waaay out of its element here. My mishap was largely due to my line being a bit wide in this corner. Thankfully, we weren't going that fast and the guardrail kept myself and the F4 from taking a trip down into the canyon.

After my crash, I was able to coast the bike down the road to the PCH. There, at PCH and Decker Canyon Road, Angel, Maria, and I waited for Josh and Stacy to come back with Josh's truck. Although Angel decides to take a trip back up Decker Canyon with Maria's bro-in-law while we waited for the truck. Again, I'll let the party involved (Angel) expand on his eventful trip back up Decker Canyon. During the 3.5 hour period waiting for the truck, I had time to reflect on a few things. Here are a few random thoughts:
  • Is this bike really cursed?
  • Should I just part this mofo out and buy another 600/750?
  • Damn..there are some nice-ass cars in Malibu!
  • These leathers held up well and did their job.
  • These roads kick ass.
  • I'm truly blessed to have walked away from this.

Anyway, after Josh and Stacy arrived with the truck, we loaded up the F4 and headed over to Maria's parents house for some BBQ and a much needed drink or three for me. Of course, this wasn't the way I wanted the day to end, but it was a decent end to a no-so-decent day.

Much thanks to Josh for allowing us to stay at his place and cutting his ride short to get his truck. Thanks to Stacy for making the trip with Josh to get his truck. Thanks to Angel and Maria for hanging out with me while we waited for Josh and Stacy to get back AND for inviting us over for the bomb-ass BBQ.

I'm ready to do this again. (minus the crashing part) Who's with me?

Good God man! Is Stacy the only one without a "mishap"? Glad you guys had fun, I'm hoping to get back to SoCal in the near future to hit those sweet roads.

Good shit! I've done the Rock Store several times...but, never on a sportbike (I only had a cruiser when I lived in LA). Another trip out doesn't sound bad.
And, you guys were still lucky, there used to be a death a week up on Mullhulland...glad everyone is OK!

Yo E, it is time to say goodnight and Godspeed to the F4. it is trying to tell you something. And buying the Busa did not make it too happy. I do see a 750 in your future. There is a nice one in the For Sale area that would look nice next to the Busa. Glad everyone was able to walk/limp away from all of this. It always comes in 3's....

Looks like you guys had a blast though.... I never thought I would miss the west coast as much as I do.

Man, I definitely feel you here. The F4 is definitely pissed at me for bringing that sexy bike home.

I'm so ready to take the Busa back out there. Matter of fact, I'm going to hit up those canyons in the G35 the next time I drive out there. They are a blast.

No real plans to sell right now. As far as I can see, it needs a new upper fairing, left lower fairing, headlamp, both mirrors, windscreen, and a shift lever. It's about $800 (Ebay) worth of parts.

The Busa would do just fine. You ride to the limit you are comfortable with when you ride diff bikes. I can remember jumping on the 750 after riding the Busa for a week straight and I would push it well past what I was capable of on the Busa. Only because it was lighter and wanted to be ridden more aggresively. The Busa can handle that kind of riding, but at a lower pace...

How did the Case cover hold up???

Decker Canyon. Similar type crash. Lowside in some sand/gravel. Mine went off the edge into a hole. No worry mate, only cost me around $4000 in repairs and helmet. Shit happens. I went down in Yerba Buena about 8 years ago. Again, lowside. Got to love those twisty roads though.

Man...sorry to hear about the lowside...that sucks! You do have to watch the dirt on some of those roads. It can get a bit slippery. I love riding in that area though. That is were we go when I ride with my SoCal ZRXOA buddys.

BTW...Did you guys hit up Tuna canyon? Those are some tight technical twisties.

No, our day ended before it realy began. Besides with all the weird shizzel going on ( me dropping my bike, truck and trailer running into Angel) it was best we call it a day as it could have been worst. It was still a good weekend for me as I got to hang out with friends and eat some great BBQ.
