Divers are rarely attacked by sharks unless the diver just does something stupid, like trying to grab it. Sharks do come close to divers because we look funny to them... we arent shaped like fish, we are big, and we have bubbles coming out of our heads. We dont look like food to them.

People on surfboards look like turtles from below. Sharks love turtles. Shark mistakes a surfer for a turtle, hits the surfer hard, gets a taste, says fuck this isnt a turtle, and swims away. But it usually injures the surfer pretty badly.

People swimming on the surface, create the same splashing and sounds in the water as an injured seal or fish in distress, and we kind of resemble a seal from below. Sharks dont see very well, and most of the time the water near the beach is cloudy anyway. So once again, shark mistakes a person for a normal shark food item, makes his attack, gets a taste and lets go. Or like in florida where there are alot of bull sharks in shallow water, people step on them by accident. The front of a shark is all mouth, with lots of sharp teeth, so it causes major injuries. Sharks dont just eat people though, we dont taste good to them.

The most dangerous place to have a shark, is below you, in water with poor visibility conditions. That doesnt happen often while diving.

I'd much rather take my chances as a diver with sharks in the water, than riding thru any intersection in Las Vegas on my motorcycle

More like the orange fish was stalking me :)

Seriously though, there are alot of Giribaldi at Catalina, and they are pretty bold, will swim right up to you, and sometimes nibble at you to get you to go away. Seemed like everwhere I went, another one was swimming up to me.

Its not legal to collect abalone while scuba diving anymore, although it is still legal to collect them while free diving.

Eight people died last year in California while free diving for abalone

Looks like a great trip Pheer. Where exactly were you diving and what boat? Are you using the S&S dg1 camera?
I really love diving the kelp forests. Beautiful and a little eerie at times.

We dived at Eagle Rock, someplace else, then someplace else... They tell use the names of each place but half the time I'm busy getting my gear on and really only listening to them tell us what is under the boat, and in what direction.

All my dives at Catalina, the oil rigs, and a couple of wrecks have been on the Sun Diver. My next trip out there with Scuba Views will be March 6 & 7.

Camera was the Sea & Sea DX-1G with dual stobes. I'm still getting used to it, but my underwater pics keep getting better.
