The Norfolk-based USS Enterprise is celebrating a major milestone.

Fifty years - no other aircraft carrier has reached that mark, and Monday, November 28, 2011 was a day to celebrate and remember.

But as the leaders who took the podium will tell you - it's not just the celebration of the USS Enterprise, it is a celebration of the people who made her great.

"We are legend" is the motto of the first nuclear aircraft carrier. Fitting, as the memorial on Monday honored the 250,000 who have served on the USS Enterprise.

"It's four years of your life you know working your tail off," said David Hardman, who once served aboard the Big E.

David Hardman came back to reflect on his time aboard. So did Udell Wegner, a plank owner, one of the first to bring her to life.

"Well it was home for several years, I can tell you that."

He says the "Big E" is a big part of his heart - a sentiment shared by those sailors walking her halls today.

"Old traditions in the Navy still exist."

And all of them - young, and not as young - are remembered.

Those still here, those friends and shipmates now gone - and those still missing. The crew that has made her great. The people - not just the ship - celebrating 50 years.

"We are legend...the ship is legend, the United States Navy is legend in its own."
