Onslow County sheriff’s officials say a fugitive wanted on a murder charge in Atlanta and arrested in this area earlier this week is suspected of sneaking a handgun into a county jail cell by hiding it in his rectum.

The suspect — Michael Leon Ward, 22, of Sugar Lake Drive in Canton, Ga. — was placed in the cell after a strip search, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

Ward claims the gun was already in the cell when he was placed in it, according to information from the sheriff’s office.

He was charged late Thursday night with murder and armed robbery by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, using fugitive warrants from Georgia.

Ward was also charged by the OCSO with resisting a public officer, possession of drug paraphernalia and simple possession of a Schedule VI control substance. The N.C. State Highway Patrol charged him with driving while impaired, speeding, unlawfully passing an emergency vehicle, reckless driving to endanger the public, resisting a public officer, providing fictitious information and no operator’s license.

No charges related to possession of the gun at the jail had been filed Friday night, and the investigation was continuing with a medical examination.

State Trooper Scott Merritt stopped Ward on Monday morning for allegedly passing him at 90 mph on U.S. 17 in a 2010 Dodge Avenger registered to Anthony Keith West. Ward and a woman with him, Vanessa Laranda Ragland, 18, with ties to Atlanta and Jacksonville, are accused of rolling up the windows and locking the doors when Merritt approached.

Ragland was charged with assault on a government official. She was later charged with resisting public officer and providing fictitious information. She was placed in the Onslow County Jail under a $2,500 bond.

Charges allege that Ward resisted arrest. He was subdued with a stun gun and taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital where he was examined and given “a shot to calm down,” according to court records.

Ward was initially searched by the Highway Patrol upon arrest and by deputies during booking, authorities said.

“Arrestee Ward was strip searched prior to being booked into a cell block for the … traffic violations,” the press release states.

He was charged with lying about his identity while being booked into the Onslow County Jail, where investigators later discovered his true identity and the outstanding warrant.

While behind bars, Ward called out to jailers claiming someone was trying to kill him and that a gun was in his cell. Jailers searched his cell and found a .38-caliber pistol in the toilet. Ward claimed he found the gun in his bunk and tossed it into the toilet, according to an affidavit by Sheriff’s Sgt. Rocky Maestas.

The gun lacked bullets, and no bullets were found in Ward’s cell, the release said.

Investigators believe Ward hid the firearm in his rectum prior to being taken into custody, according to a search warrant for the car he was driving when he was arrested by the Highway Patrol.

According to the sheriff’s office, Ward was taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital for possible injuries that may have occurred to Ward's rectum during concealment the revolver, which has a six-inch barrel. He was still being examined at the hospital on Friday night.

Authorities say that while the gun was not loaded, it was test fired by OCSO crime scene investigators and determined to be functional.

Maestas served the search warrant on the vehicle. It was not immediately clear whether Maestas found ammunition, but after the search he charged Ward with possession of marijuana and digital scales, according to arrest warrants.

Prosecutors in Fulton County, Ga., did not return calls seeking details on Ward's murder charge or whether the firearm he is said to have brought into the jail is believed to be the murder weapon.

Ward is being held with no bond while awaiting extradition.
