Sup everyone? I just ordered a D.I.D 520 conversion (-1 +2) on a 954rr. I've heard a couple of people say that 520's aren't recommended on anything over 750cc's. Is that true? I have a couple of friends with liter bikes who have 520's and they don't have any problems. What do you think?

it just makes the bike spin up faster less reciprecating weight the 520 chain weight and sprockets are thinner and weight less but with less weight and less material there it will wear out a little faster then the stock size chain and if you plan on doing wheelies alot forget it the jerking motion or doing wheelies is hard on chains to begin with but using a lighter weight chain just means its gonna be harder on the smaller chain but for normal driving and riding around you should be fine just the chain will wear out faster

I run a 520 (-1+2), it's a very nice combination of bottom end perfermance without much top end loss on the R1 and never had a problem .... just my personal experience

The only thing you need to worry about is the quality of the chain. Don't some websites also list the max horse power on each chain?

Find the make/model of the stock chain that came on the bike, then go to the website and find out the tensile strength for the stock chain. Then go to the different makers sites (EK, RK, DID, Tsubaki, etc) and find a 520 chain that has comparable strength. But good luck finding one that comes close.

Here's an example: My stock chain is rated at 10,300psi tensile strength. There are 3 chains made that are at/above that rating. All of them are 530's. EK's ZZZ, EK's ZVX, & D.I.D.'s ZVM2 (stock chain is a D.I.D. ZVM). The strongest 520 chain on the market is only around 9,000psi tensile strength.

And if you use a 520 chain that isn't rated for the size/hp bike you put it on, it voids the chain warranty. So if it breaks while you are out at B.F. Egypt, you'll have something to think about during your long walk home. That is, best-case scenerio it comes apart when you are going 5mph. At a hundred & change, who knows what it will do to you.

To me, the minimal weight savings (less than 2lbs) just isn't worth the risk. If you want more performance, stick with the stock 530 chain, and drop a tooth in front, or add a couple in the rear. Or lose a few lbs body weight.

I am with Pat on this one... WHo is the minor weight loss gonna benefit. And it is not like the 520 is cheaper.

It definately revs faster. I'm diggin' the low-end to midrange power. I thought I was gettin' a D.I.D but it's an RK GBS520GXW X-Ring with Vortex sprokets for $139 for everything. http://www.sumofallparts.net/ After the 520 wears out, I'm going back to 530's.

i've talked to Todd from Calsporbike about this at length numerous times. there's only one 520 chain that is rate for use on a 1k. the DID ERV3. this is a race chain and is the chain used in WSB (if i remember right). i have installed this on quite a few 1k's and have not had one come back with excessive chain stretch.

STEEL, be careful with that rk chain, i think that's the same kit that's sold on Ebay hella cheap. my homie installed one on his 1k and it snapped on him after a few months.
