Yes I did. Funny thing is after Sundays accident on my way home I was thinking "I should have gone to Fontana to race, it's much safer" once I got home I checked the results to find out there was a fatality at the race Was a bad day all around I guess.

Damn... my first time to log in, in almost 2 months... and I see the stuff that has pretty much caused me to stop going to any sportbike sites. Didnt really expect it, especially here. Wish I hadnt looked at those pics. Best wishes for a full recovery to those who were injured.

I got tired of 702SB, the damn stories almost daily: somebody crashed, rider down, fatal accident, or a cop pulled me over and he was a dick, henderson cops suck, park rangers are assholes, etc etc and it seems like a sportbike is related to just about every story. Yes I know it can happen on any bike period, but I rarely see it on the cruiser forums, and only moderately see it on the sport-touring forums. Its pretty much turned me off to sportbikes in general, and makes me wonder, whats the point anymore?

So...

Just bought another VTX1800. Yeah, my 5th VTX. A good friend is retiring and moving to Santa Fe and offered it to me at a price that was just too damn good to walk away from. I'll have a VFR800 & ST1300, and possibly my KX250, and XR100 for sale soon. I dont ride them anymore, and cruisers are my favorite (and always have been) so I may as well get rid of the other bikes that just sit in the garage and when I look at them, I have no urge whatsoever to hop on one and go for a ride.

Yes I agree you should make it mandatory that everyone on the group rides, wears better gear. I still have nerve damage in my right hand from the time my own tickle-me-elmo glove came apart. Sucks to be doing something and suddenly just drop whatever was in my right hand for no apparent reason (ok Josh, no jokes here) and other injuries remind me every morning when I wake up, how stupid it was to be going so fast on a sportbike one day in Utah... Yeah it was fun up till a point, but it damn sure wasnt worth what I live with everyday.

So ride safe guys, I hate to hear of anyone getting hurt, especially on a SCS ride.

Very well said Pheer. I do not and will not ride anymore, and that has made me look at my experiences differently, but I do not think I would change a thing. Life is weird that way; you never know what yo are going to get out of any decision you make. But making sure you are prepared for it can be the best decision to make.

The only way SCS can mandate certain gear is to issue it. Some of us always ride with the most advanced and safest gear on the market, and others do not because it is not in the budget. And the budget is a very strong thing to deal with these days. But gear alone will not make certain everyone is going to be safe all the time. Gear just makes you better prepared to deal with the possible man/woman down scenerio.

It seems to me that SCS goes through this annually, but nothing ever really changes. I have always thught that the organization and practices of the group would/could ensure safer rides and less danger. If you can avoid people going down, then the gear is not as important. SCS can promote the use of gear as they/we have been doing for the 4+ years I have been involved with the group. But gear is only half the battle (Maybe less). Promoting safer rides, better decision making, and maybe a little more structure (Not much) could go a long way in helping avoid these situations.

I do not know much about this particular incident/ride, I do know that gear PROBABLY would have prevented some of the injuries, but what could have been done to prevent the accident?

What I think I am saying is that we should prob look at the entire experience and think about what could have/did go wrong, and what the group may have been able to do to avoid it. I am not saying anyone is at fault at all, it just seems that lately there have been alot of discussions about how the rides unfold and what SCS should make as "Rules" for rides.

The most seasoned rider, with the best gear available can still be seriously hurt in any situation, that is one of the dangers of this hobby/way of life.

I need an update on the riders. How are they doing as of now. When will they be going home? how your support, the crash already happened; can't change that... Help them keep their spirits up, it is a very important thing when you go through something like this.. You guys helped save my spirit when I was going through my hell. Continue to be the wonderful family you have always been.

They have moved Judy to a rehab center and hopefully John will be following shortly. John is very mobile, all things considered. They both have a long road ahead of them. She has added challenges with the diabetes and renal issues. Injuries to the feet pose circulation problems.

One thing I will say is that their spirit is unbelievable. In true SCS fashion, they want what happened to them to be turn into something positive for the community as a whole.

you can't help but love these 2 more and more each day

I should have mentioned earlier. One pic is of his arm the day after the accident and you can see where his muscle is showing through. The other arm pic was from Saturday after they did a skin graph. They used artificial skin so that's why it looks shiny. The other pics were taken today, Sunday, when they were changing the dressing.

Hey, I don't know you, and you don't know me. I am John's Ex-wife. I know this is kind of awkward but I thought you might like some pics of John's foot and arm. John said I could forward them to you. I don't know how to add to this blog, so if I screw it up, I am sorry. They are a little gruesome, but pretty amazing.

I guess I should have told you guys....he's been sent home. He's no longer at UMC. I believe he will be going to the same rehab as Judy, but UMC actually sent him home. I should know later today where he'll be. I update you guys tonight...:)

Jimmy, I just put a (GRAPHIC) tag on the thread title. I thought it would be appropriate.

I have a different take....its hard to see these pictures but it doesnt make me not want to ride a sportbike...It just reaffirms the need for proper gear and (potentially) better decision making. Even when I ride in the the middle of July and its hotter than f*** out I still have ALL of my gear on because I know how much it hurts when you go down (and I rode 3-5 times a week last summer). Even when riding in Idaho (annual trip where there is no helmet law) I am still all geared up. From what Ive read there could have been some ice on the road and to be ripping it at a high rate of speed with a passenger was not a good idea.

I personally will never understand the cruiser (or harley) mentality. I love riding sportbikes and will ride them until my body cant keep up but gear, skill level and decision making play a much larger role than the type of bike we ride when it comes to accidents and how injured are you should you go down.
Good luck to you Mr Pheer--enjoy your VTX!

The rehab center is on St. Rose and Jefferys in Henderson. It is called Heathsouth Rehab Center. I am not sure what the hours are, we just walk in.

And i hope that john, doesnt let this affect him riding, i know it will be a really hard thing for him to do. But i would strongly urge for him to keep riding. I am not trying to offend any one by saying that i just want to see him riding with us again. But a little slower!

after a few talks with John while he was at UMC, at first he said he wasn't going to get on a bike again but after a while it changed to him just wearing gear and slowin down. I'm sure, knowing John, after he is fully recovered he will saddle up again. I think that mishaps like this make someone an even better rider, he will know the consequences before he takes the risks

Good God! I heard the story today from Eric at the overlook and had to see the pics. My prayers are with both of them for a speedy recovery. I have some half assed Frank Thomas boots. Think i'm gonna go shopping for better gear!!!

Why is it hard to understand?

Some people like riding sportbikes, some dont. Some people like riding on a machine with a high-rpm, high-horsepower engine at high speeds, and others prefer the low-rpm, massive torque v-twin and a more leisurely pace. Some want a race-replica machine with sponsor decals and paint just like thier favorite racer rides, other want a more customized machine and lots of chrome plated parts that makes a more individual statement. Some love riding at high speeds with their engine screaming, knees dragging thru the curves, while others like a slow relaxed pace while enjoying the view.

And some prefer taking more risks, others prefer just taking in the scenery
