No problem! I like to go beyond homework to get a better understanding of my classes. I must say the panning shots (like redsurfergurl's & born2run's) were the most difficult- only pulled it off for some of you, sorry :(

Nice. I think I like that one picture of me better that any of the ones I actually paid for. Looks like Pat is riding in a dirty parking lot.

Hey there Equanimity, I take it you were using a 70-200 with a 1.4 extender on it? Nice shots and you did real good with your panning...if you have any questions regarding shooting sportbikes/motorsports, feel free to ask. Take care, Mat G. South Bay Photography

Yes and yes. I wish I could have gotten closer for more clarity though. I noticed I had a couple pictures with the asphalt heat wave effect and in some the riders had a glow or halo effect off the brighter portions of their gear/bikes. This was my first time shooting motorcycles and only my second stab at motion, so I just sort of dove in with no clue.

What's your post processing like? Do you do any sharpening? Did you have to crop a bunch? You always want to try and fill your frame in your camera with your subject. Yes, it's very hard to shoot motorsports with only a 70-200, even with a 1.4x because, for safety, you have to be back so far. I just looked at your site and you have some nice images on there, but I can see you missed the focus on a couple, but just by a touch. Either that or you don't do any sharpening in your post work. But be careful and don't over do it because you can't bring back an OOF (Out Of Focus) image by oversharpening it because then it will just look like crap. ![]() Are you shooting in RAW? If so, you can correct some of the coloring halo effect in post when you run through Adobe RAW. However, if you're shooting in JPG, it's much more difficult to correct. You seemed to have done pretty darn well for it being your first time shooting any type of motorsports. I wouldn't be sorry. You did really well. You just need to hone your skills a bit and work on your panning modes and maybe some of your post processing. From what I saw your coloring seems to be good, so I'm guessing you either set your custom white balance well or you got lucky and your AWB or daylight WB worked really well for you. LOL Like I said, if you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to help however I can. Oh, and for all of you guys/girls that have no darn idea what we're talking about...it's okay...just means we're getting you awesome pics..we're just photog geeks is all. ;-) Last edited by R1_Demon; 05-21-2010 at 02:12 PM.

I actually just started learning Lightroom and Raw in Bridge I'm really tempted to go back through all the discs to make what corrections I can. That involves time tho. That and my burner is craptastic- Id have to hit the lab at school. As for Raw vs JPEG, I realized all the images saved to the card were JPEG. The only way I can get it to save as Raw is if I turn on Backup to another card slot- then it saves one Raw and one JPEG. Either that or I'm retarded. For focusing, I was trying the AI Servo for the first time, but I found corner images where it focused on a cone instead of the rider ![]() And yes, there was cropping. Even at full zoom, I was at the mercy of distance. Born2run's disc is the only one where there were no corrections- for reasons of feedback and such. Some images I felt I needed more space on certain sides of the bike, depending on direction/position of the bike, to give a feeling of more movement and spatial relations.

Learn Lightroom...it is awesome and does SOOOO much more than Bridge and SOOOOO much faster. Trust me on this. I use Photo Mechanic and Lightroom for all of my pro stuff and then Photoshop for anything LR2 (Lightroom 2) can't handle (which really isn't too much). It will be way worth your time to learn LR2. I'm not going to say you're retarded...buttttttt.... You must have it set up for backup. Yes, then I believe it can only save one as jpg & one as raw on each card. However, if you save them specifically (non backup), then you can save as RAW. Actually, if you want, you can even save each shot as RAW & JPG together, so it will save two files per shot. You are shooting with a Canon 1D Mark II-N, correct? If so, you have the exact same camera I do. I shoot RAW exclusively. I think I've only set mine to JPG once...you just have soooo much more flexibility and adjustibility shooting in RAW. Believe me. If you need any camera setting tips, shoot me a PM or email me. I'll go over settings. If you're shooting something moving, you NEED to shoot AI Servo. Otherwise, unless you are VERY, VERY lucky, you will be OOF almost every time. This is where the mucho practice comes into play...especially for motorsports. You'll learn to keep tracking your subject while the autofocus works it's wonders, but you have to be the one to keep the focus on the subject. The AF can only do so much. Unless you're shooting with a 400 (or maybe a 300, depending on the corner & track), you'll need to crop. Unfortunately, it's just how it is. it sucks, but it's the nature of the beast when you get into motorsports without a long lens. ![]() Why do you think my next big lens purchase is a 400 f/2.8L? Ya and it sucks that it's $7,000 too. Again, nature of the beast.
