Support what? Land possession?Resources? Because if you're speaking of slavery, that was just a secondary issue added into the course of the war. It was just like most wars, over rights to resources that another person or persons owns. The slavery issue was included to try and convince any of the slaves to come fight for the north, earning their freedom and increasing their numbers. Same reason some politician are fighting FOR illegal immigrants; they just want their vote. The couldn't care less about the people themselves.
