Hey there,
After talking with a few of the guys, I've got a revised route in mind. Instead of going south, we'll go north, and ride the Santa Monica mountains and coast... Mulholland Hwy and the 1 PCH... here's a link to a route I put together from our offload spot in Cypress, CA to Santa Barbara where we can get a hotel for the night. It has portions along the coast, hitting beaches like Redondo and Venice, as well as some good twisty miles through the state parks north of Malibu. I did my research and tried to find recommended roads/routes, but am totally flexible with how the day may shake out. :)

Looks like hotels in Santa Barbara vicinity run about $120 - $150/night for double queens (so like $60-$75 per person depending where we stay)

We will load up and leave vegas on friday july 29 and come back on sunday the 31.
Sorry for the long ass link, hope it works, first time I've done this using Google Maps...

Whaddya think?

If you're going up the 101 towards Santa Barbara, you HAVE to hit Ojai! Hwy 33 just past Ventura. You can take it up to Hwy 166 and cut back west that will take you back down to the 101. Otherwise, it's just horrible slabbing on the 101, enjoy splitting. I'll be hitting it this weekend, along with ACH and Big Bear. I'll post some pic when I get back.

Thanks for the heads up, I have read a lot about that route but wasn't sure what type of riding (or how much) everyone wants to do... sounds like a good idea though... it adds on about 60 miles and we can end in Santa Maria instead of Santa Barbara. I'll talk to the guys and we can adjust as needed! :)

Are you looking for a scenic rout with nice views and cool weather OR are you looking for nice fun twisties in the canyons where you can live out your boyhood fantasis of becoming Valenteno Rossi

I agree with Vegasrider, you if you're in the area, you have to check out Ojai. It's a lot like riding around the lake, except the turns come at you a little faster, and they're just a little tighter. Absolutely awesome ride. I did the ride linked below over Memorial Day and it was incredible. Once we got to the 166, it was kinda boring though. If I do it again, I'll only follow the 33 until I get to Lake Of The Woods then turn around. Very long ride, but sounds like it would meet the criteria you're looking for.

For those who haven't done Mulholland, to say it's epic is an understatement. I've never been on a road that tried to turn itself into knots so much. Lots of videos on YouTube to give a perspective.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...2&ie=UTF8&z=12

Not too sure about hotels though. My buddy and I stayed on a Navy base just for the added security of not having to worry about our bikes disappearing in the middle of the night. But I'm pretty sure we saw some places to stay off of the 101 both north & south of Oxnard

Lots of canyons just north of Malibu to keep ya busy all day. We hit Mulholland and several other canyons last month that put everything within 100 miles of Vegas to shame. Leaving the Rockstore on Mulholland starts at 1:00.

Yep! I wish I could have turned around and went back with you guys because I never made it all the way up Mulholland, and I know I missed the best parts of that road!

Just a reminder, do not cross that double yellow. I mean going wide in the turns, that's what the cops are looking for.

Wear all your gear, including your riding pants or full leathers. You're a long ways from home. In the event you do have a mishap, you'll be able to get right up.

If you you get caught behind slower vehicles, be patient, most will acknowledge the faster bikes by actually pulling over into the first available turnout. Unheard of in most places. Kind of like when you're splitting lanes in slow traffic, most drivers are courteous enough that they actually favor to one side so you have room.

The Banning grade going up to Idyllwild is sick. Steep grade, and tight turns. I'm hitting ACH on Friday. Hitting Big Bear and ACH again on Saturday and Ojai on Sunday so I'm going to miss ya by a day. Maybe I might see you as we slab home on the 15 Sunday night.

Guys, stick with BigBear, it's close and there's more curves than you can imagine----first gear curves, curves so tight you almost have to get off the bike curves.

One thing I dislike about BigBear is that it's so damn congested. Lot's of traffic. At least Ojai is isolated, and ACH is predominately all motorcycles. Just got done riding ACH this afternoon, lots of rocks. I guess Cal Tran ran out of money to clear the roads.

I'll be hitting Big Bear in the morning, and ACH again in the afternoon.

Slightly north of Santa Barbara is Santa Maria. Much more reasonable room rates.

Just finished a 1300 mile ride the past 2.5 days. I'm still dizzy....ACH, Big Bear, Crestline, ACH again, Little Tujunga Canyon (totaly sick), Ojai. I'm very fortunate to know so many Southern Cal riders that can lead the way, and know all the best local roads that are really off the beaten path. Plus they usually know where all the cops love to hide out. Kind of like you guys know where the LEO hang out at RR.

Picture of Ojai from one of the overlooks.

I'm a possible at best, but what would really help if you firmed up on the route, what hotel you will be staying, how many miles you are planning to ride each day, etc. Most importantly, anyone who is commited to this ride needs to start a list of In's.

Here's a slideshow that I created from my ride last week, sync to the song "I Love LA"

Ok, here's my thinking... and I'm flexible on this since I'm new to this whole thing, so those of you that are "in" feel free to chat at me about how you wanna do this... but I know ppl have to work on Fri so we can either leave late Fri night or EARLY Sat morning. (and by early I mean meet at my house by 4am, out the driveway by 4:30am). Drop my truck & trailer in Cypress, CA and hit the road from there.

Spend the day putting on about 150 - 200 miles going through the Santa Monica mtns, stopping at the Rock Store (30354 Mulholland Hwy 91301, supposedly a classic pit stop), on up through Ojai & the 33 in Los Padres Nat'l Forest, ending via the 166 to Santa Maria at the Holiday Inn ($140 for 2 queens) or Travelodge ($70 for 2 queens) (2100 N Broadway 93454 or 2250 S Broadway 93454) I know people are on a budget so either is fine with me, just depends what the "ins" wanna do. I plan on having some beers once we stop so as long as the beds are clean I can sleep anywhere.

Then, Sunday, take our time getting back to Cypress and the truck, perhaps hit a different route through the Santa Monica Mtns, put on another 150-200 miles, and then cruise back to Vegas.

In:
Derek
Tim
Arson

We can do more or less miles depending on weather, stamina, inspiration, coin flips, whatever, lol, I just wanna ride.

Thanks to everybody for their feedback, hints, tips, & videos/pics! It's cool to have met a good group of ppl who obviously love this stuff! Cali riding DOES put Vegas to shame!

Why are you trailering? You're missing half the fun by doing this. You can hit ACH highway on the way down to LA. Plus you are probably wasting a lot of time heading back into LA to pick up your vehicle when you can head straight back home. Plus, when you are in LA, you won't be able to split traffic, meaning you're going to be spending more time driving than riding.

I highly recommend that you leave Vegas Friday morning. That's what I did. Enjoy having lunch at the Grizzly Cafe in Wrightwood, the beginning of ACH.

Staying in Woodland Hills California Friday & Sat night would be better if you are planning to hit Muholland Dr and the Rock Store. It's right of the 101, below the foothills of the Malibu/Topanga Canyons just minutes away. No reason why you would want to stay down in Orange County. Also you can go hit PCH from there and ride Ojai if you are planning to head north.

Anyone willing to ride out Friday morning? Hit ACH around noon. There is no reason to go or stay in LA, I am willing to stay around Woodland Hills which is right below the Rock Store, Muholland Dr and Malibu. But the hotels are not cheap. Take Friday off, you will regret it leaving Saturday, unless you take Monday off.

Brand spanking new Hilton Garden Inn, ideal location.

Update: I'm rolling out at 0800 as I am planning to hook up with a couple of Southern Cal riders who are very good friends of mine down at the Cajon Junction I-15/138 at 11 Friday morning, which is about 210 miles away. Lunch at Wrightwood just before hitting the Crest.

Anyone who wants to tag along let me know. This 0800 departure is based on no stops for piss or fuel.

I have reserved a suite at the Residence Inn in Westlake Village, between Agora Hills & Woodland Hills, right off the 101 for Friday and Sat. night.

I am planning to meet with them again on Saturday morning to ride. They know the roads, they know where all the LEO's hang out, and most importantly, they know where to ride and where not to go since it gets overcrowded during the weekends, especially around the Malibu Hills area.
