SX: San Diego Results
2/11/2006
By JC Hilderbrand

James Stewart played the role of the San Diego stalker under the full moon at Qualcomm Stadium where the Kawasaki sensation rebounded with a popular and hard-fought win over Ricky Carmichael.

RC pulled the holeshot with Stewart directly behind him as they entered the first of two consecutive rhythm sections. Local hero Jeremy McGrath was in third and Yamaha's Chad Reed followed him for a lap before slipping by. The speedy quartet rounded the slippery, technical circuit unchanged in position for the next sixteen laps as Carmichael and Stewart pulled away. Bubba followed RC tirelessly through the 18th lap, hounding the champ and watching his lines like a seasoned veteran. "I was just trying to size him up," Stewart claimed.

Stewart gained time on the rhythm sections and through the whoops before Carmichael would stretch it out again in the back section and down the start straight. Wading through the lappers, Bubba looked to make a move on a tricky step-off left hander but was blocked hard by Moto XXX Honda rider, Kyle Lewis. But before the crowd's roar had even died Stewart was again on Ricky's heels. With two laps to go the Kawasaki pilot tripled to the inside of a left hand bowl turn and squared off for the pass.

Carmichael tried valiantly to retaliate, but Stewart began to check out and pulled off his third win of the AMA Amp'd Mobile Supercross series. It was also his third victory in San Diego.

"My main goal is to try to win some races," he said on the podium. "I'm three-for-three in San Diego. This is my favorite stadium."

Chad Reed had a relatively lonely night after he passed McGrath, cruising in easily for third. "I just wasn't on my game," said Reed, "that's what it comes down to." McGrath took fourth in possibly the last race of his illustrious career and Mike LaRocco gave himself an early birthday present with a fifth. The Sobe/Samsung Mobile/Honda rider celebrates his best finish this year turning 35 tomorrow.

Carmichael retains an 11-point lead over his green nemesis as the series moves to the East Coast. "I gave it my all and rode my hardest and got beat," he said. "It was worth the price of admission tonight. He was better than me tonight, but I'm proud that I'm coming out of here with the points lead."

The premier division was preceded by the most boring Lites race of the season. Factory Honda's Andrew Short took over the lead immediately after Mike Alessi nabbed the Progressive Holeshot award aboard his Red Bull KTM. Only during the final few laps did the action heat up as Grant Langston, who started mid-pack took advantage of rider traffic to catch the leader. His efforts fell short, however, despite being in striking distance for the final lap. It was apparent to most that if the race had been a single lap longer, things could have ended differently, but the South African simply ran out of time in the 15-lap main event.

The controversial Alessi slipped back to third on Lap 11, but stopped the bleeding after teammate Nate Ramsey bumped him back on more on the next lap. Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki freshman Ryan Villopoto took the final top-five spot after rounding the first lap in 15th.
