I Ride: Deciding
How big of a deal is it to have your main street bike as your track bike? I was reading an article the other day in motorcyclist and one of their test riders has a 09 ZX-6R where he is using it for both the track and street. He even goes as far as to remove the lights, passenger pegs and other extraneous bits he does not need using track plastics instead of street fairings. Is that what most of you guys do or do you just ride with the street fairings in place? I know plenty of people do that, but I would feel safer with track plastics on the bike in the event of a spill.

I ride track days with the street plastics, but I think I'll get some race plastics for this season. If you're only going to do one or two track days a year, I really dont seen any point in spending the $ on race plastics, but if track riding is a priority of yours then track plastics and other track stuff may be worthwhile. In my opinion, spend the money on leathers and safety gear first, then make additions to the bike.

+1 for leathers and gear

I also ride track days with street plastics, everytime without any spills (knock-knock)
Removing mirrors, Passenger pegs and taping up headlights and taillights is pretty easy stuff, usually takes a few hours

Plus most tracks recommend you to saftey wire oil plugs and filter I believe
and change over from coolant to water wetter or a non glycol cooling solution

I wish I had two bikes one dedicated for track and one for street
But for now Im working on an extra set of wheels and tires one for street and one for track

Thanks guys, I will definitely be buying full leathers, race boots, armor etc. before I do anything to the bike. I guess I will just have to see how many track days I can fit in this year and go from there on the plastics issue.

I change to track plastics for track days...pain in the arse.
Dedicated track bike would be the way to go...but for infrequent track visits, I'd stay with the street plastics and just make sure you stay within your limits at the track so you dont have an incident...
